FARMVILLE, Va. – NC State's David Loera finished with a goal and an assist to lead the 17th-ranked Wolfpack to a 2-0 win over the Longwood men's soccer team Tuesday night at the Longwood Athletics Complex.
NC State (7-3-2) was able to overcome a young Longwood team that saw five freshmen earn starts and play more than 60 minutes against an ACC opponent, while the Lancers (3-9-0) played the game without starters
Sherif Maalouf, Aj Kmeic and Ander Extaniz.
"Quite simply, NC State were a better team once they gained the lead," said Longwood head coach
Jon Atkinson. "Through the first half, we stuck to our principles and put in a reasonable first half performance, not great but solid.
"Second half, we deviated after conceding and we have to find a way to stop hurting ourselves and spotting teams goals. It's not healthy and quite frankly is crippling our season from a result standpoint. In spite of the setback, we have a great amount to play for."
The Wolfpack held an 18-2 shot advantage throughout, as the Lancers held the high-powered NC State attack scoreless throughout the first half with
Miguel Bayma making one of his four total saves.
Loera opened the scoring in the 46th minute, as he dribbled his way around Bayma and was able to finish behind the Longwood defense to hand the Wolfpack the lead.
Nine minutes later, Loera picked up the secondary assist on a Tanner Roberts goal, who finished a cross from Manny Perez. Roberts' goal was his third in the last two seasons against the Lancers, as he scored both goals in NC State's 2-1 win a season ago in Raleigh.
In goal, Leon Krapf faced a total of two shots while picking up the clean sheet, while Bayma made four saves against 18 NC State shots.
Mikel Abando had both of Longwood's chances in the opening minutes, including a header that just went wide in the game's eighth minute.
Longwood deployed a total of 23 players against the Wolfpack with 11 of the 19 newcomers to the Lancer roster earning playing time on the field.
"I know we have so much more to give and with conference games coming, we can alleviate some of these headaches and climb the conference table," Atkinson said.
Longwood returns to Big South play Saturday, Oct. 13, as the Lancers welcome Gardner-Webb in the second of a stretch of three straight games at the Athletics Complex. That game is set for a 6 p.m. kickoff, as it will be the second game of a doubleheader with the women's soccer team.
