FARMVILLE, Va. – Liberty's Kevin Mendoza and Tresor Mbuyu each scored a pair of goals to lead a four-goal second half to lead the Flames past the Longwood men's soccer team 5-0 Tuesday night at the Athletics Complex.
The Flames (4-4-1) used a second-half barrage, scoring four goals in 24 minutes. Liberty was able to overcome three shots from Longwood's
Jeremy Jaquier and a seven-save performance from
Jacob Reimers.
"When you aren't winning, the field can be stressful and we saw that stress culminate in what was a decent first half result in a runaway victory due to unforced errors," said Longwood head coach
Jon Atkinson. "It's life, it's unfortunate, the game doesn't owe you any favors you just have to get work through it with a clear head and a team that wants to avenge the result we saw tonight."
Reimers got the start for the Lancers (3-7-0), making seven saves on 22 Liberty shots, as he was bettered in goal by Brogan Engbers.
Mbuyu opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, scoring an unassisted goal and dribbling past Reimers to finish in the open net.
Mendoza scored his two goals in the second half, including his first 43 seconds into the second half on a deflection from Bobby Bynum. Mendoza scored his second of the night 16 minutes later, scoring from the right side of the box.
Shaun Stocker tallied the final Liberty goal of the night on a penalty kick in the 70th minute.
"We're a capable team that hasn't quite figured it out yet," Atkinson said.
Up next, Longwood will step back into Big South play, traveling to High Point Saturday, Oct. 6. That game is set for a 7 p.m. opening kickoff.
