LYNCHBURG, Va. – Longwood sophomore
Yulia Almiron earned an extension to her fall campaign with an opening-round win at the ITA Atlantic Regional Saturday morning at the Cooke Tennis Complex.
Almiron, who went 8-11 as a freshman last season while playing all of her matches at No. 1 and No. 2, continued her momentum-fueled sophomore season with a 7-5, 7-5 singles win over James Madison's Emma Petersen in the regional bracket's opening round of 64.
"Yulia showed today what we are trying to accomplish at Longwood," said Longwood director of tennis
Jhonnatan Medina Alvarez. "That's respect to our training, willingness to follow the strategies our players are given, and the determination to fight until the last ball."
Now 5-0 on the fall, Almiron moves on to the tournament's round of 32 where she will face Old Dominion's Yulia Starodubsteva Sunday at 9 a.m.
Almiron has already won one title this season when she clinched a singles flight championship at the Virginia State Invitational on Sept. 29. Dating back to last spring when she ended the season with a 5-3 record over the final month, Almiron is now 13-3 in her past 16 singles matches.
Almiron also paired with junior teammate
Jamie Breunig in doubles play on the opening day of the ITA Atlantic Regional, falling 8-3 to the Virginia Cavalier duo of Lizzie Baker and Maya Das.
Day three of the ITA Atlantic Regional continues Sunday, Oct. 14, at Liberty's Cook Tennis Center. A victory for Almiron in the morning's round of 32 would set up a quarterfinal match against the winner of VCU's Paola Delgado and Pittsburgh's Claudia Bartolome.
