FARMVILLE, Va. –
William & Mary forward and College Soccer News Preseason All-American Antonio Bustamante delivered a golden goal in the 98th minute to lift the Tribe to a 1-0 victory over the Longwood men's soccer team Wednesday night at the Athletics Complex.

Playing their first home match in nearly a month, the Lancers drop their fifth straight, with the last two coming by a single goal. Meanwhile, the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) preseason favorite Tribe improve to 4-2-2 on the season.

"This was a tough one to take," said Longwood head coach Jon Atkinson. "We played a very good team close but, unfortunately, we had a moment that cost us the game. Overall, the work ethic and commitment from the lads was applaudable."

Bustamante, a two-time All-CAA honoree and 2017 CAA Preseason Player of the Year, scored his team-leading third goal of the season, as he was fed a through ball from William Eskay before beating Longwood goalkeeper Lance Da Silva to the low right portion of the net. The goal from Bustamante marked his third straight game with a goal for the Tribe.

Bustamante was part of a William & Mary attack that posted 21 shots, six on target. The junior had five of the Tribe's 21 shots, including two on target, while playing all 98 minutes.

"That was part of the game plan coming in," Atkinson said. "We focused on not allowing William & Mary to get into the flow of the game and looked to take advantage of counterattack situations. We put ourselves in a situation of bending and not breaking and wanted to limit William & Mary's chances, which we did for the most part."

William & Mary held the advantage in the opening half, outshooting the Lancers by an 11-1 margin. Ryder Bell had the best chance of the half, as he hit the near post of the goal in the 21st minute.

Da Silva made finished the match two saves off his career-high with five saves, leading the Lancers to hold the CAA's most prolific offense off the scoreboard for 97 minutes. Meanwhile, Phil Breno made one save against a pair of Longwood shots.

Longwood returns to the Athletics Complex Saturday, Sept. 23, as the Lancers host George Mason. Part of a tripleheader, along with Longwood field hockey and women's soccer, the Lancers and Patriots are set for a 7 p.m., first touch, as the game will be streamed live on the Big South Network.

"We're playing caliber opponents and we're very close in many aspects of the game," Atkinson said. "We're going to keep working at it, as we're not that far away."
