RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State's Tanner Roberts netted a pair of goals, including the game-winner in the 27th minute, before
Sammy Dupuy added a late strike, as the Longwood men's soccer team saw its comeback attempt fall short 2-1 Sunday night at Dail Soccer Stadium.
"We worked so hard to get back into the game but unfortunately beat ourselves in the end," said Longwood head coach
Jon Atkinson. "That can happen in the game and you have to pick it up and go again tomorrow. I'm so proud of the grind this team has."
With the Lancers playing their second game in three nights, Longwood drops its third straight to fall to 0-3-1 on the season. Meanwhile, the Wolfpack moves to 3-1 on the campaign. Originally scheduled for a Tuesday contest, the Lancers and Wolfpack moved the game to Sunday following the forecast of inclement weather in the Raleigh area for Tuesday.
"We were out under a lot of pressure by a good NC State team coming off a big win Friday," Atkinson said. "Considering our short turnaround, I can't fault the lads application."
The contest against the Wolfpack marked the second of four games on the season against ACC opponents, with one of Longwood's other two games coming against a UNCW squad that was ranked among the top-10 in the nation.
"We're still working on our timing and synergy, so our best football is yet to come," Atkinson said. "Playing tough competition might diminish the opportunities and possession will be slightly more diminished, but it's definitely preparing us for Big South play later in the season."
NC State got a goal midway through the opening half, as Tanner Roberts headed in a free kick sent into the box from Brad Sweeney. The goal marked the first goal given up by the Lancer defense in the first half this season.
Roberts connected for his second of the night and third of the season, as Tyler Gabarra crossed it to the Wolfpack forward before Roberts scored in the lower right half of the goal.
After missing all of the 2016 season due to injury, forward
Sammy Dupuy tallied his first career goal in the 86th minute off a header sent into the box off a
Dan Campos free kick. The assist for Campos marks his first of the season, after leading the NCAA a season
"Our best opportunities tonight came from set pieces and for Sammy has shown that he's a very good player in the air," Atkinson said. "I'm happy for Sammy to get off the mark and I think that's the boost he needs."
Lance Da Silva earned his fourth consecutive start in goal for Longwood, making two saves on 10 shots against. Leon Krapf made one save while facing four Longwood shots.
Longwood is set to conclude its four-game road swing Saturday, Sept. 18, as the Lancers head to Appalachian State. First touch for the game is set for 7 p.m.
