RICHMOND, Va. – Longwood's 2017 women's soccer season opener against Richmond was halted just over 17 minutes into the first half due to lightning and excessive rain Friday evening at Robins Stadium. There are no immediate plans to continue or reschedule the game.
Lightning strikes in the area forced officials to pause play at the 17:31 mark shortly after Richmond's All-Atlantic 10 forward Lexi Prillaman put the Spiders (0-0) ahead 1-0 with a 15th-minute strike. Heavy rain followed, rendering the field unplayable.
Longwood senior goalkeeper
Maria Kirby made three saves, which would have bumped her into the top five on Longwood's all-time saves list. Instead, all statistics from the game were negated, and Kirby remains in sixth place on that all-time list and fourth on Longwood's Division I list with 175 career stops.
Longwood now adopts a new season opener, shifting the first official game of the season to this Sunday's 2 p.m. home showdown against Howard at the Longwood Athletics Complex. That will be the first of two straight home games for the Lancers, who follow by hosting Towson on Aug. 24, a game that will also serve as Longwood's first Big South Network broadcast of the season.
