FARMVILLE, Va. – Presbyterian's Plamen Mangarov finished a cross in the 77th minute to lead the Blue Hose to a 1-0 win over the Longwood men's soccer team Saturday afternoon at the Longwood Athletics Complex.
Coming off a 1-1 tie against reigning Big South champion Radford, the Blue Hose (4-5-2, 2-1-1 Big South) have collected points in three of their first four Big South games to climb into the top-four of the conference standings. Meanwhile, Longwood (0-10-1, 0-3-0 Big South) sits three points outside the final tournament spot three games into the conference schedule.
"This was is a tough one for sure, as there wasn't much between the two teams throughout," said Longwood head coach
Jon Atkinson. "Once again, we showed defensive grit and organization. Ball retention wasn't good enough to translate to a result and we have to do better."
Mangarov scored his first goal of the season, becoming the eighth Presbyterian goal scorer on the campaign. His goal in the 77th minute broke open a scoreless tie, as he finished a cross sent in from Kellan O'Hara from the left side of the box. Mangarov was able to tuck his shot into the lower right corner of the goal.
"Presbyterian showed good resilience and made it difficult for sure," Atkinson said. "Other than one good effort turned away by Lance [Da Silva] and then the goal on transition, which is a strength of theirs, we didn't do enough in breaking them down and translate to quality chances. We can't feel to aggrieved by the result."
Longwood appeared to score the game's opening goal in the 20th minute, as
Eoin O Donovan sent in a cross that was deflected into the goal by
Max Poelker, but the play was ruled to be offside. The Lancers had numerous other chances from the box, but the Blue Hose back line, anchored by goalkeeper Connor Behrend, was able to answer the call each time. Behrend finished the game a pair of saves.
"We aren't getting the rub of the green right now this season," Atkinson said. "I feel all we need is one to get us going."
The Lancer defense once again stood tall, as the unit hasn't yielded more than two goals this season and has allowed just four goals in three Big South games. Da Silva continued his solid form making four saves on 17 Presbyterian shots.
Over his last three games, Da Silva made 15 saves and recorded a .789 goals against while yielding 1.32 goals against average.
"It's not where we want to be but it's a reality and we have to accept it," Atkinson said. "I expect this group to rally back and focus on one game at a time starting at Wake Forest."
Longwood returns to the pitch Tuesday, Sept. 10, as the Lancers face reigning NCAA runner-up and No. 2 Wake Forest. First touch from Spry Stadium is set for 7 p.m., with the game set to be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
