Donnelly Hat Trick Sparks Campbell Rally Over Longwood

Longwood Scores Three First-Half Goals, Falls in Overtime, 4-3

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell forward JJ Donnelly erupted for a hat trick, as the Camels fought back from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the Longwood men's soccer team by a 4-3 margin on a golden goal in the 104th minute Saturday night at the Eakes Complex.

Donnelly sparked the Camel comeback, as Campbell scored the final three goals of the game after trailing at the half by a 3-1 margin. Donelly's winner in the 104th minute was a header that clanked off the post and past Longwood goalkeeper Lance Da Silva.

"Being up 3-1 on the Big South leader on the road, you don't expect to lose," said Longwood head coach Jon Atkinson. "However, we didn't put a second half performance and we contrived to wrestle defeat from the jaws of victory."

In addition to Donnelly, Gabe Parrish registered a goal and a pair of assists, as the Camels (8-5-1, 4-1-0 Big South) remain in first-place in the Big South standings at the midway point of conference play, along with Liberty. Meanwhile, Longwood (0-12-1, 0-4-0 Big South) finds itself six points behind Gardner-Webb for the final spot in the Big South Tournament.

"We were prepared, players knew exactly what to expect and it seemed to be panning out," Atkinson said. "However, the game can be cruel at times and sometimes you can just hurt yourself in the process and today was a bit of both."

The Lancers scored a season-high three goals in the game, as Dan Campos, Eoin O Donovan and Josh Hanratty were able to find the back of the net in a stretch of 30 minutes.

Campos scored his first goal of the season off a penalty kick in the sixth minute, before Donnelly quickly answered that in the ninth minute off a header to the far post from a play setup by Parrish and Carel Kayembe.

O Donovan tallied his first of the season in the 33rd minute in unassisted fashion after gaining possession in the box and firing a bullet from seven yards out past Matthew Mozynski. Three minutes later, O Donovan added an assist, as Josh Hanratty added his first goal as a Lancer off a corner kick.

"We had good moments tonight and were in control like we have been in many games this season," Atkinson said. "We're missing something to get us over the line and it's hurting us. I'll be looking to fix that sooner rather than later."

Donnelly tallied his second of the night in the early portion of the second half with a strike in the 53rd minute, before Parrish scored an equalizer in the 79th minute.

Donnelly nearly ended the game at the end of the first overtime period, but a diving stop from Da Silva kept the two teams knotted 3-3, before the Campbell forward completed his hat trick four minutes into the second overtime.

Da Silva finished the game with six saves, two shy of his career-high, while Mozynski had two saves against 11 Longwood shot attempts.

Longwood steps out of conference for the final time this season Tuesday, Oct. 17, as the Lancers look to avenge an overtime loss last season against Commonwealth foe James Madison. First touch for that game is set for 6 p.m., at the Athletics Complex.
