WASHINGTON, D.C. – Howard forward Hollie Cartwright tapped in a cross from Jasmin Miller for the game-winning goal in the 71st minute as the Bison slipped past Longwood, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Greene Stadium.
Howard (2-0-1) and Longwood (0-3-0) were tied for the majority of the game after sophomore defender
Sydney Wallace netted her first career goal to tie the game at 1-1 at the 22:38 mark in the first half. The Lancers peppered Howard goalkeeper Mackenzie Diotte with 11 shots, including seven on goal, but the sophomore keeper made a season-high six saves in the Bison win.
"We did plenty of good things today and had our opportunities to win the game," Longwood 23rd-year head coach
Todd Dyer said. "We also kept the door open for Howard, and they seized that opportunity."
The two-time reigning SWAC champions jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Makela Davison five minutes into the first half to start the scoring. Howard took advantage after getting a pair of shots on goal in the course of 30 seconds, the second an unassisted goal by Davison, who dribbled into the box and beat Longwood keeper
Maria Kirby on a shot to the lower left corner.
Davison's goal held for 17 minutes until the Lancers threatened with a corner kick.
Janese Quick fed a cross that Wallace headed off the crossbar, which Wallace then recovered and sent in for the Lancer goal.
After Howard scored the go-ahead goal, Longwood had several chances to tie the game but came up short each time. The Lancers earned two corners and placed three shots on goal. Sophomore
Sheyenne Stretz put a shot on goal in the 78th minute and then placed a header on target in the 82nd minute, followed by a shot on goal by three-time All-Big South midfielder
Amanda Spencer in the 83rd minute, but Diotte saved all three attempts to tie the game.
Jayden Metzger,
Teresa Fruchterman, Spencer, Stretz, and Wallace all placed shots on goal in the match. Twenty-four Lancers made an appearance in the match, and Longwood outshot Howard 11-6 in the loss.
"It's all a process, and we just have to keep growing as a team," Dyer said. "As we do, we must be better to stay in games while we sort ourselves out on the offensive end."
The three-game losing streak is the longest winless streak to begin the season since Longwood went 0-4-2 to begin 2013 before the Lancers bounced back for a third-place finish in the Big South and quarterfinal hosting duties.
The Lancers continue their four-game trip away from Farmville, Va., with a match at Duquesne on September 2. Kickoff in Pittsburgh, Pa., is set for 7 p.m. Friday at Arthur J. Rooney Athletic Field.
