CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – A 14th minute strike from Virginia midfielder Paddy Foss led the ACC powerhouse and preseason-No. 17 Cavaliers to a 1-0 win over Longwood Saturday night at Klöckner Stadium in the exhibition opener for both teams.
Foss connected for the game's lone goal in the 14th minute with the assist credited to Viktor Falck.
"We weren't cohesive at the start and reacted poorly to the early pace and were sloppy in several departments," said Longwood head coach
Jon Atkinson.
Two-time All-Big South honoree
Carlos Canas received the start in goal for the Lancers, who are three days into preseason training, and was credited with nine saves throughout the contest.
Virginia held the advantage in shots with 13 to Longwood's 10.
"I think we can take a bit of everything from this game and that's what preseason games are all about," said head coach
Jon Atkinson. "On the positive, we took a ranked opponent to the wire and had several good looks at goal.
"I was particularly delighted with our freshmen and newcomers who showed great poise and purpose in their first contest."
Senior midfielder
Finnlay Wyatt provided the Lancers with their best chance of the game off a free kick where he hit the post.
Following the conclusion of the game, the two squads participated in an extra 30-minute session to get more student-athletes involved. Virginia added a pair of goals in the extra session with Simeon Okoro and Jarren Nixon Jr. scoring goals for the Cavaliers.
Virginia is one of three schools from the ACC that Longwood will face this season, as the Lancers are scheduled to travel to Virginia Tech and host Pitt.
Longwood debuts at Lancer Field and completes its exhibition slate Monday, Aug. 22 against Lynchburg College. Kickoff from the Athletics Complex is set for 6 p.m.
"We have a good break until our next game in which we can analyze areas to improve and strengthen," Atkinson said.
