Late Lancer Rally Falls Short At Navy

Longwood Drops Tight Contest On The Road

Box Score ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Andrew Hopkins netted a goal on a header off a corner kick in the 65th minute to give Navy a lead it held onto despite a late charge by Longwood in a 2-1 win for the Midshipmen Tuesday night at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.

Senior captain Finnlay Wyatt led the Lancers on a late charge in an attempt to net the equalizer. In the 90th minute, Wyatt struck a shot that was pegged for the back of the net, but his game-tying attempt went off the crossbar. Longwood (4-7-1, 1-2-0 Big South) took two corner kicks and took two shots in the final minute of play but was unable to force overtime.

The final minute barrage was the conclusion of a half in which the Lancers controlled throughout, forcing Navy goalkeeper Mac Burke into making all three saves he made in the game.

Longwood drops its second straight decision, while Navy improves to 3-6-3 on the year.

"This was a game that I felt we let slip through our fingers from lapses that will hinder progress," said Longwood head coach Jon Atkinson. "We can play with any team and tonight we controlled a lot of the game but until we punctuate our good play into the final third we will put pressure on ourselves."

The goal for Hopkins broke a tie that stood for eight minutes after Longwood freshman Max Poelker scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season to negate a first half goal from the Midshipmen. Poelker's goal was assisted by Wyatt to mark his third helper in the past three games, as he and Poelker are tied for the team lead with 12 points on the campaign.

Senior goalkeeper Carlos Canas drew the start in goal for the Lancers, making a pair of saves.

The match for the Lancers was the first of two consecutive away from home. Longwood travels to Presbyterian Saturday before beginning a stretch in which the Lancers play three of the final five games at home.

"I'm looking forward to seeing our response against Presbyterian," Atkinson said. "I can see so much potential in our group and once they fully commit to finding that collective understanding of what is needed, they will gain the success."

Including Saturday's contest with the Blue Hose, five of the final six matches for the Lancers are conference games, with the lone non-conference affair a road game at James Madison. Longwood and Presbyterian kick off Saturday at 2 p.m.
