FARMVILLE, Va. – Jayden Metzger notched a pair of assists and
Maria Kirby recorded her third shutout of the season, as the Longwood women's soccer team won its fourth straight home game, 2-0, over Winthrop Saturday afternoon at the Longwood Athletics Complex.
Longwood (5-7-0, 2-1-0 Big South) continues a dominant run on its home field, earning its fourth straight win in Farmville as Kirby picked up her third shutout of the season. Following a 5-0 win in the Big South opener against Gardner-Webb, the Lancers have outscored conference opponents 7-0 at home in 2016.
"That was a typical Big South grind in my eyes," said Longwood head coach
Todd Dyer. "It was a tight game until the very end and Winthrop made things difficult for us for the fully 90 minutes. We dealt with some pressure in front of our own goal, but found a way to keep things in front of us."
Metzger's two-assist day marks the first of her career and the two points were also the first points of the season for the senior product of Midlothian, Va. Metzger's two-point performance was her first multi-point game since she recorded her lone career goal, a game-winner against Radford in 2015.
Meanwhile, Kirby notched her 11th career clean sheet in the Lancer victory. The Woolwich Township, N.J., product made three saves on seven shots by Winthrop. Kirby, a two-time Big South Defensive Player of the Week in 2016, is having a breakout junior season and leads the conference with 64 saves.
Christina Corbin notched her first career game-winning goal in the 20th minute after taking a feed from Metzger. The Glenn Allen, Va., product settled the ball, before firing a shot past Winthrop goalkeeper Karly Gustafson.
"We definitely want to give Corbin credit for an incredible finish in the first half the way she brought the ball down from the air and then struck the half volley," Dyer said.
Longwood came out and controlled possession to start the second half, outshooting Winthrop (3-7-0, 0-2-0 Big South) by a 3-0 margin within the half's opening 15 minutes.
Amanda Spencer provided the Lancers with an insurance goal in the 60th minute, after taking a pass from Metzger and beating Gustafson in a one-on-one situation. With the goal, Spencer continues a stretch in which she's tallied points in four consecutive matches, dating back to Longwood's 2-1 double overtime victory over Saint Francis.
"Once Spencer scored the second goal that allowed us to dictate possession a little more especially between our goalkeeper, center-backs and holding midfielder," Dyer said.
Longwood will have four days off before squaring off against Radford on the road.
"That's another home win and shutout, but now it's time to look ahead for our trip ahead to take on a very strong Radford team," Dyer said.
The Highlanders enter the match 3-0 with multiple goals in each contest. The match for the Lancers against the Highlanders in Radford, Va., is set for Wednesday, Oct. 5, beginning at 4 p.m.
