FARMVILLE, Va. – A goal 41 seconds in set the tone for a dynamic offensive night for the Longwood attack, as the Lancers tallied a Division I program record six goals in its Big South home opener against Campbell Saturday night at the Longwood Athletics Complex.
Finnlay Wyatt registered a game-high six points on a pair of goals and assists, while
Max Poelker,
Dan Campos and
Mo Jalloh each registered multi-point games, as Longwood scored the program's most goals in the school's 10-year history in the Division I ranks.
"It was a good game, we had control of the game throughout," said head coach
Jon Atkinson. "As the game progressed, the guys showed a lot of character. It was a good night for our lads, a good night for our fans, a good night to be a Lancer."
The outpouring of offense helped the Lancers end a three-game losing skid, as the squad scored three times in the final 11 minutes to dismantle a Campbell squad playing with 10 men.
Longwood welcomed the return of goalkeeper and team co-captain
Carlos Canas and defender
Tom Devitt to the back line that saw the Lancers face just 13 shots. Canas picked up his fourth victory of the season, making two saves. Meanwhile, Devitt played all 90 minutes in his return to the field, along with sophomore
Daniel Marques who also played the full 90 on the backline.
"Anytime you get a captain back and a quality player like Tom, it's going to help the guys on the field," Atkinson said. "Tom's a very classy defender. He wins his tackles, wins his headers. I thought he set the tone back there. I thought he played very well.
"Having Carlos back helps settle everything down. Every team needs a quality keeper. He had a very sure performance tonight and he'll become a force to be reckoned with, along with a very good back line."
A three-assist night for Campos gives him five in his last three games, as the junior midfielder has an assist in five of his last seven games. For Campos, it marks his third career multiple assist game, including his second this season coming on the heels of a two-assist effort against Appalachian State.
"We were thinking a bit offensively and we had the confidence to perform," Campos said. "It was important for us to get going early and find ways to get shots through. It's important for us to get that first goal and luckily tonight we were able to get it."
Longwood was able to get off to a blazing start, as Poelker one-timed a cross from Wyatt after he got the feed from Campos at the top of the 18-yard box. The goal is the fastest goal Longwood has scored this season.
"Getting the first goal in any game is important," Atkinson said. "It really settles us down. We talked about having a good start, a quick start. I didn't expect it to come that quick. I'm glad our guys were able to take control, get the second goal, refocus and play the game through. Take advantage of opportunities when they come."
Meanwhile, Poelker – who's tied with Wyatt as the team's leading goal scorer – tallied the first two-goal performance of his career.
"This is really one of the best feelings I've had in my life," Poelker said. "It's been something I've worked on now for a while with the coaches and in practice. It was good to be able to help the team win, especially coming off the loss at UNC Asheville last weekend."
The Lancers doubled their lead 15 minutes later, as Campos found
Sherif Maalouf on the right side of the box with a through ball. Maalouf was able to beat Campbell goalkeeper Matthew Mozynski for his first tally of the season.
Wyatt and Campos combined on Longwood's third goal of the night in the 54th minute, off a free kick where Wyatt rifled a bullet that directed off a Campbell defender and into the back of the net.
"I thought I played well," Wyatt said. "More importantly, I thought the team played well and it's always good to get the win. To score six goals tonight, it just felt like everything clicked tonight for us as a unit."
Then the floodgates opened.
Wyatt, Poelker and
Eoin O Donovan combined to score three goals in a span of 11 minutes. It started when Wyatt fired a shot through traffic for his second of the night in the 80th minute, before Poelker worked his way to in front of the goal and scored his second of the contest.
In addition, O Donovan scored the game's final goal, chipping a ball past Mozynski to elevate the Longwood lead to 6-2.
The Lancers look to build off the effort, as the squad travels to High Point Wednesday, Oct. 5, for a 6 p.m., contest.
