FARMVILLE, Va. – Junior midfielder
Dan Campos scored a golden goal in the 102nd minute to send Longwood to a thrilling 1-0 overtime victory over Presbyterian Friday night at the Athletics Complex.
With the win, the Lancers snap a three-game losing streak, to even its record at 6-6-0 and a 2-2-0 ledger in Big South competition. Presbyterian remains winless on the season with an 0-11-1 record, including a 0-3-1 mark in the Big South.
"First and foremost, it was important to get the win and that's what we did," said head coach
Jon Atkinson. "At the end of the day, no matter how many shots we take, how many attacks we had, we had to find a way to get a result. The guys stay disciplined throughout and got the job done, but credit to Presbyterian who provided much resistance throughout the night."
After gaining possession in the Presbyterian side of the field, Campos fired a shot from 30 yards out that went through the hands of Blue Hose goalkeeper Johnny Archer and bounced into the upper left corner of the net for the game-winning tally. The goal for Campos marks his second of the season and his first career game-winning goal as a Lancer.
"I just took a shot and it happened to go in," Campos said of his game-winning tally. "I was just happy to see it go in and for us to get the win."
Meanwhile the Lancers controlled play throughout in the attacking third, firing a season-high 26 shots with eight shots on goal. Archer made seven saves throughout the game, including three saves on 10
Willy Miezan shots.
Junior goalkeeper
Carlos Canas earned his sixth career shutout, including his third of the season. The junior was backed by a Longwood defensive unit that held Presbyterian without a shot on goal in the game.
"It feels good," Canas said of his third shutout of the season. "This is the most shutouts I've had in a single season since I've been here, so it definitely feels good. I'm just looking to keep it going into the next game."
The backline of
Michael Durr and
Marten Pajunurm each played all 101 minutes in the game, while
Alex Waite came off the bench to give the Lancers a lift. The group gave up just six Presbyterian shots in the game.
"Those guys are tremendous on the backline," Canas said. "From the leadership of Mike Durr and the play of Marten, those guys really step up and make my job easier. Alex as well is only a sophomore and is a solid player for us. We play well back there together as a group and have strong chemistry."
With Canas in goal, the Lancers have given up just three total goals on the season, as the junior earned his third clean sheet in his fifth start. Canas has limited opponents to 0.55 goals per game, which ranks at the top of the charts among goalies in the Big South.
The Lancers will now prepare for the second game of a three-game home stand, as the squad will face Howard Tuesday, Oct. 20. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
