FARMVILLE, Va. -- A late goal by Christian Lawal tied the game in the 87th minute, and a game-winner by Angel Valencia seven minutes into overtime capped a 3-2 comeback win for George Washington over Longwood Tuesday evening at the Athletics Complex.
The two late goals came in a span of less than 10 minutes and erased a 2-1 Longwood lead that the Lancers kept until the 86:56 mark in regulation. Longwood (1-5-1) was undone by a pair of red cards that gave George Washington a man advantage for a majority of the second half and a two-man advantage for the entire overtime period. Lawal's goal came against a 10-man Longwood squad that lost senior captain
Michael Durr to a pair of yellow cards, while Valencia's game-winner came against a nine-man Lancer group that lost sophomore forward
Finnlay Wyatt to a red card in the final minute of regulation.
"What started as a bizarre night developed into something more extraordinary, and I'm still coming to terms with what I witnessed," Longwood head coach
Jon Atkinson said. "I feel for our players and fans alike with regard to some decisions that were out of our control, but life goes on and you have to keep things in perspective as we move forward."
The Lancers weathered the first card and scored short-handed on a beautifully-executed series of passes from Wyatt to
Will Lambert, which opened up senior
Zach Crandall to score from the top of the box and put Longwood ahead 2-1.Longwood (1-5-1) nearly made it to the extra period with only a slight mismatch, but another red card to sophomore Wyatt in the final minute of regulation sent the Lancers into overtime two men down.
"We produced some of the best soccer I've seen from this team and know they deserved more, and that makes it harder to take," Atkinson said. "But part of growth is dealing with disappointment and how you respond to it. It's not easy to control a game for 90 minutes, but we were close until the second off, and that changed the game's complexion."
Longwood goalkeeper
Carlos Canas suffered the loss, another hard-luck defeat in which he saved seven of the 10 shots he faced. His last save came in overtime off a shot from George Washington defender Sam Summerline, but it bounced right to Valencia who poked it right past the lunging Canas to end the game. Canas came through with four saves in the second half, including a pair on close-range headers after Durr left the game.
The loss to George Washington signals the end of the early non-conference schedule for Longwood, which opens Big South play Saturday at Winthrop. The Lancers then return home for a matchup against rival Radford on Wednesday, Oct. 8.
