GREENVILLE, N.C. – Longwood goalkeepers
Hailey Machen and
Maria Kirby combined to shut out East Carolina in regulation and keyed a scoreless tie in an exhibition match Friday evening at Johnson Soccer Stadium.
East Carolina pounded the goal with eight shots through the first 90 minutes, but Machen turned away all four that came her way. She yielded the net to Kirby at the 72nd minute, and the Longwood freshman carried the shutout to the horn. It was the starting debut for Machen, a junior who had played in just one match over her first two seasons as a Lancer before Friday.
The lone goal of the game came in an unofficial overtime period when Longwood sat its regulars and cleared the benches over the final 20 minutes. Pirates forward Courtney Taybron scored at the 3:57 mark in the unofficial overtime period. It was the ninth shot of the game for East Carolina and the only blemish on freshman
Caroline Crowder's 20 minutes in goal during the extra period.
The Lancers managed to place two of their four shots on goal, but East Carolina's three-player rotation of Saundra Baron (45 minutes), Ally Glover (20 minutes) and Erika Lenns (45 minutes) kept Longwood off the board. Forwards
Haylea Witz and
Ashley Weidner took Longwood's two shots on goal, while
Kylie Dyer and
Natalie Fry also had one attempt apiece.
Next up for the Lancers is the season opener at American on Aug. 22 in Washington, D.C. Longwood will then return to Farmville for the home opener against Richmond at 6 p.m. on Aug. 24, which will be the culmination of the university's annual Greatest Athletics March Ever (G.A.M.E.)
