FARMVILLE, Va. – Radford got five goals from five different players on the way to a 5-0 win at Longwood Wednesday evening at the Athletics Complex, extending the Highlanders' win streak to five straight.
Radford (7-2-2, 4-0-0 Big South) entered the game as one of the Big South's hottest teams, outscoring opponents 10-1 with three shutouts during that streak. The Highlanders gave Longwood little chance to challenge that run as goalkeeper Aitor Pouseu Blanco saved the only two shots on goal he faced en route to his league-leading fifth shutout of the season.
On the opposite end of the field, Stephen Hudgens put Radford ahead just 2:13 into the game to spark an offensive rally that included ensuing goals first-half goals from Dario Redondo, Krzysztof Nalborski and Neil Martorana and a second-half punctuation mark by Ramzi Dridi. Radford's final two goals came off corner kicks served up by midfielder Raser Colmer.
With the win, Radford assumes the top spot in the Big South standings. The Highlanders have not lost their past nine straight matches, thanks in large part to Blanco's meager 0.67 goals against average and a defense that has allowed the second-fewest shots in the conference.
That back line was on full display Wednesday, holding the Lancers to just two shots in the first half before
Zach Crandall and
Nnamdi Ikeazor broke through in the second period with a combined four shots. Only one of those was on the mark, however, and Blanco was there to scoop it up and keep the shutout alive.
The shutout comes on the heels of two multiple-goal performances for the Lancers, who had lost back-to-back matches by one goal. Longwood will have a chance to get back on track Saturday in a road matchup at High Point. That game will air live on the Big South Network's free internet broadcast.
