FARMVILLE, Va. – After putting together the best season of her four-year career, Longwood midfielder
Samantha Phillips was named to the 2014 All-Big South Women's Soccer first team to headline a list of four Lancers who received conference honors Friday.
Â
Kelsey McDonald and
Amanda Spencer, who partnered with Phillips in leading the Lancers to an 8-8-3 overall record and a 3-5-2 mark in conference play, received all-conference second team recognition. Freshman
Teresa Fruchterman was honored with a spot on the all-freshman team, while McDonald also collected a Big South All-Academic Team nod for the second straight year.
Â
The All-Big South awards are the first for seniors McDonald and Phillips. It is the second straight All-Big South honor for the sophomore Spencer, who was also the Big South Freshman of the Year in 2013.
Â
Phillips was one of 13 players and four midfielders selected to the all-league first team, receiving the award for a 2014 performance that included a career-high seven goals, three assists and team-highs of 17 points and 74 shots. The main cog in a Longwood offense that scored the third-most goals in the conference, Phillips sank three game-winners including the go-ahead score in a 3-0 senior night win against UNC Asheville.
Â
McDonald made the full-time switch to defender in 2014 and emerged as one of the best in the league at the position. A shutdown defender capable of controlling her entire side of the field, McDonald was a key piece of a Longwood backfield that yielded the third-fewest shots in the Big South and registered five shutouts. Her senior campaign capped a remarkable career in which she played over 5,800 minutes in a Lancer uniform and made 73 starts. She was even more impressive in the classroom, registering a 3.99 grade point average as a business administration major.
Â
In her second season as a Lancer, Spencer built off a breakout freshman campaign by scoring seven goals with a pair of assists and 16 total points. She heated up down the stretch and delivered two goals and two assists in a two-game stretch against Charleston southern and Presbyterian, earning Big South Attacker of the Week honors for the performance. Spencer delivered two game-winners in 2014, scoring the go-aheads in victories against VMI and Howard.
Â
Fruchterman made her mark from the first time she stepped foot on the field, scoring goals in the first two games of her collegiate career. She went on to lead the Big South in shots-on-goal percentage, putting 15 of her 19 shots on target while finishing with four goals and an assist. She found the back of the net against No. 3 Virginia Tech, which was one of only 13 goals allowed by the Hokies all season. Her fourth goal was the game-winner against Saint Francis on Sept. 13.
Â
The 8-8-3 overall record marks the ninth consecutive year that the Lancers have finished .500 or better. The Lancers have placed at least three players on the All-Big South Team every year since joining the league in 2012.
