Second-Half Start is Longwood's Undoing

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb scored twice in a 55-second period early in the second half to send the Bison cruising to a 3-1 victory over the Lancers Saturday night in the Music City.

"What started out positive turned south when we conceded a soft goal," said head coach Jon Atkinson. "You can attribute some of that to a lack of confidence. I believe if the early chances had fallen, this would have been a different outcome. Now we have to regroup and move on."

Lipscomb jumped out to a first half lead in the 38th minute Jonathan Ramirez beat Longwood keeper Carl Carpenter off the assist by Ivan Alvarado. Longwood managed to quell the storm and make it to the break down just 1-0. The Lancers were outshot 6-3 in the first 45 minutes, and Carpenter made two saves to keep the margin at a single goal.

That's when everything went awry. Longwood came out in the second half and before the Lancers could muster a comeback effort, Lipscomb struck twice. At 52:55, Anthony Cedano struck off a cross and exactly 55 seconds later, Luke Gearin made it 3-0 from the penalty spot.

Longwood found a little luck in the 74th minute as the Lancers sent a ball into the box which careened off of Gearin and into the net for an own goal. That brought the Lancers within two, but that's as close as Longwood would come.

Carl Carpenter got the start in net, his second of the season, and produced three saves on the evening. Longwood would finished the game down a man after Michael Durr picked up his second yellow card with just under five minutes to play, but the result was already well in hand.

"There are plenty of games left to salvage something from this season," said Atkinson. "We have the players to do it once we fully commit to being a team for 90 minutes."

Longwood continues its non-conference swing by hosting Appalachian State Wednesday night in Farmville, Va. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at the Athletics Complex.
