Longwood Comes Up Empty Handed at Campbell

Lancers Notch 19 Shots but Can't Find the Net

BUIES CREEK, N.C.—Longwood outshot Campbell 19-9 Wednesday night, but the Lancers fell 1-0 after the Camels struck just 3:52 into the second half.

After a rather pedestrian first half, Campbell broke through on a rebound. Ashley Clark launched a blast toward the right side of the net, but was turned away by Hailey Machen. Unfortunately for Longwood, Nicole Connolly was there to pounce on the rebound for Campbell and send the Lancers home empty-handed.

"We played a lot of great soccer and have nothing to show for it," said head coach Todd Dyer. "We have to score goals to win games, and we're creating plenty of chances, but finishing isn't there when we need it."

Longwood indeed created a flood of opportunities with its 19 shots including seven on target, but Alexis Connors saved them all and preserved a hard-earned shutout. The Lancers cranked up the pressure in the second half, firing 13 shots in an attempt to equalize.

Adding to the frustration in attack, Longwood racked up 11 corners on the evening. On those 11 corners, the Lancers only mustered three shots of any sort. Two were saved and another sailed over the crossbar.

Longwood did not go down without a fight, as a late surge produced five shots in the final seven minutes including three on-target. Christina Corbin had a team-high five shots, placing four on goal and saw two of her best chances turned away in the final moments.

"Campbell was opportunistic and efficient tonight," said Dyer, "and that was all they needed for the result. Now we just have to continue to grow and keep fighting to get into the tournament."

With the loss and Gardner-Webb's victory over Presbyterian, Longwood drops to eighth in the Big South standings. The Lancers currently occupy the final playoff position, just ahead of Winthrop, with two games remaining.

Longwood returns to Farmville, Va. for senior night against UNC Asheville on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m.
