CLINTON, S.C. – Anthony Ugorji netted a career-high three goals on Saturday as Longwood cruised to 4-1 win over Big South opponent Presbyterian for the Lancers' second-consecutive victory.
"Road wins at this level aren't easy," said head coach
Jon Atkinson, "but I thought our lads applied themselves very well and put in a resounding performance."
Ugorji and the Lancers jumped out to a quick start, as the senior forward struck twice in the span of five and a half minutes. Ugorji's first score broke the ice at the 13:24 mark as
Finnlay Wyatt found the striker in the box and Ugorji finished to the far left post. Minutes later, Longwood struck again this time
Zach Crandall earned the assist as Ugorji chipped it past the Presbyterian keeper who was caught off the line.
The score was 2-0 and Longwood was off to the races.
The blue and white would continue to pour it on in the second half, connecting for the third time just six minutes into the half.
Zach Crandall took a
Dan Campos cross and slotted the ball into the left side of the net to give Longwood a 3-0 advantage.
Ugorji finished off his hat-trick in the 61 minute as Crandall sent in a cross which Ugorji headed home for a resounding 4-0 advantage. The hat-trick is the first of Ugorji's career and marks a continued return to form following an early season injury. The senior has now scored four goals in the past two games combined and it couldn't have come at a better time for Longwood.
"I thought Anthony has given us an X-factor that we sorely lacked," lauded Atkinson. "Today he lit it up, scoring two exceptionally well-taken goals to allow us to take a foothold in the game. Even then, everyone around him worked hard to ensure a true team performance."
The lone blemish on the day was a late Presbyterian goal, which thwarted the Lancers effort for a clean sheet. The Blue Hose were awarded a penalty kick in the 81st minute and Mason Lewis beat Longwood keeper
Carl Carpenter for the goal.
Carpenter came on in the 70th minute in relief of starter
Carlos Canas and the two combined, along with a stingy backline, to keep Presbyterian contained in attack. The Blue Hose only managed two shots on goal, despite having seven corner kicks.
Longwood (3-8-1, 2-3) now has back-to-back wins and has scored four goals in each of those victories. The pair of four goal games mark the first time the Lancers have accomplished the feat in over a decade.
"The goals are starting to come and the players are starting to believe," stated Atkinson. "We must never lose sight of what helped us turn this around and what could help finish the season with a bang."
The Lancers return to Farmville for a showdown with rival Liberty on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. Liberty and Longwood sat fifth and sixth, respectively, in the Big South standings coming into the day and Wednesday's clash figures to be a crucial fixture in conference play.
