FARMVILLE, Va. – Despite taking 41 shots and winning a significant chunk of possession time, the Longwood women's soccer team was forced to settle for a 1-1 tie against Gardner-Webb Saturday evening at the Athletics Complex.
Led by a career-high 13 shots from senior forward
Samantha Phillips, the Lancers (6-6-2, 1-3-1) amassed 17 shots on goal but snuck just one of those past Gardner-Webb goalkeeper Krista Chauvin. Chauvin totaled 16 saves with her only fault coming on a well-executed corner kick that went from Longwood forward
Olivia Colella to Phillips to
Amanda Spencer, who stuck the ball into the top of Gardner-Webb's net for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Spencer's goal tied the game at 1-1 in the 55th minute after – despite Longwood's sizeable shot advantage – Gardner-Webb scored on its second shot of the game to take a 1-0 lead in the first half. The Runnin' Bulldogs' lone goal was started by Shelby Hooe's missed shot off the cross bar that bounced right to Brandi Arey, who fired into an open net for a 1-0 lead.
"I've never seen a soccer game like that at any level, at least not to that extreme," said 21st-year Longwood head coach
Todd Dyer. "We created an abundance of chances to score goals and win the game but just couldn't take advantage. In the end, we got exactly what we deserved and that's a tough pill to swallow. Goals win games, and we have to start being better in both penalty areas where outcomes are ultimately decided."
Longwood dominated the time of possession battle and kept the ball in Gardner-Webb's third of the field for the majority of the game. The Lancers had scoring opportunities ranging from 25 feet to point blank in front of the net, but Chauvin was there to spoil each one. The 5-6 grad student keeper was just as effective in extra time, knocking away Longwood's four shots on goal in the first overtime period.
On the other side of the field, Longwood goalkeeper
Hailey Machen was largely unbothered by the Gardner-Webb offense, excepting the short flurry of action that resulted in Hooe's goal. Despite the lack of action, Machen kept her head in the game and came up with a huge, diving save in double overtime that ultimately preserved the draw. The save came on what would be Gardner-Webb's second and final scoring chance of the game when 1:48 into the second overtime period Hooe infiltrated the Longwood box and fired a shot across goal to Machen's right. Machen lunged and knocked the shot back into the box where Hooe regained control but fired the follow-up high and out of bounds.
That would be the last bit of excitement in the 110-minute contest as Phillips' last shot on goal was blocked almost immediately by a Gardner-Webb defender.
Longwood continues its three-game homestand this Wednesday against Presbyterian at 4 p.m. followed by a Saturday home game against Charleston Southern at 2 p.m.
