Box Score

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Junior Anthony Ugorji/Washington, D.C. and sophomore Christian Keilty/Spotsylvania each scored second-half goals as Longwood University battled Campbell University to a 2-2 draw, but advanced in the shootout, 4-1, on Tuesday night in a quarterfinal of the 2013 Big South Men's Soccer Championship presented by Musco Lighting at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.  The Lancers (7-8-4) made each of their first four penalty kicks in the shootout, while the Fighting Camels (5-10-4) made their first before the second was high and the third was saved by freshman keeper Carlos Canas/Manassas.  Longwood, seeded No. 3, will next play No. 7 Liberty University on Friday night, November 15 at 7 p.m. in the semifinals at Bryan Park in Greensboro, North Carolina.

"It hasn't quite sunk in yet as to what we have achieved tonight," said ninth-year Longwood mentor and Big South Coach of the Year, Jon Atkinson.  "Tournament play is so different with character being tested throughout, but we showed great spirit to come from behind to take the lead and then to hold our nerve in the PK shootout.

I am so proud of our team and delighted that we kept the season alive.  It is a cruel way to end a season, as Campbell had its moments with some good looks tonight, and they will count themselves unlucky … but we aim to take our shot at Liberty in what promises to be an exciting game against a tough opponent."

Campbell scored first in the closely-played match, as Patrick Moore finished a well-played ball into the box from the right side by Tunji Osifeso at 28:40.  It remained a 1-0 advantage at the intermission for the visitors.  Longwood got on the scoreboard in the 63rd minute when Ugorji rebound his own attempt off the crossbar and moved the net at 62:53.  The Lancers quickly took the lead at 2-1 after Keilty scored with an unassisted blast from inside the box that found the left upper 90 at 69:10.  The Fighting Camels, however, had an answer in the 79th minute on a goal scored by Jhuvon Francis with a header attempt from a corner kick by Justin Franz at 78:09.  In the first OT, Franz had an attempt hit off the crossbar, as it remained 2-2, and neither team was able to get another good scoring opportunity … forcing the shootout.

In the PK shootout, sophomore Sam Yardley/Fairfax Station went first and was good with his shot down the middle; Franz followed and was also good with his attempt to the left corner.  Sophomore Mike Durr/Brandon, Mississippi was next and good to the right corner; Cameron Mulvey followed and missed high.  Freshman Vaughn Fowler/Chester was third to go and was successful down the center; Travis Golden followed and had his kick stopped by Canas.   Sophomore Rhys Cairns/Washington, England went fourth and was good to the right corner to secure the 4-1 shootout margin and send the Lancers on to the conference tournament semifinals.

Campbell had a slight 15-11 advantage in shots for the match, including 7-3 in attempts on goal, while Longwood had a 9-5 edge on corner kicks.  Cairns had three shots, while Ugorji and sophomore Philip van Berkom/Zetten, The Netherlands each had two attempts.  Canas played the entire contest in front of the net with five saves.

Isaiah Page had four shots for Campbell, and Francis had three attempts, while Ethan Hall played the duration in front of the net with one save for the Fighting Camels, who had defeated Longwood 3-1 on October 23 in North Carolina, and still lead the young series, 2-1.
