FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University 18th-year women's soccer head coach
Todd Dyer '93 has announced his upcoming
2011 Schedule, featuring 10 home matches at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. The Lancers finished 2010 with a record of 11-8 overall, including 8-2 at home where the program is 35-10-1 since beginning competition at the facility in 2006. Longwood is 28-9 at the Athletics Complex since attaining its NCAA Division I certification and eligibility for 2007. The Lancers, however, will open 2011 on the road at the University of Richmond of the Atlantic 10 Conference on Friday, August 19, at 7 p.m.
“Once again, Coach (Steve) Brdarski has worked very hard to put together a schedule that is challenging, yet fair, in regard to the balance of competition at home and away,” said Dyer. “We'll be tested early with our season opener at Richmond and three of our first four games taking place on the road. However, we're very excited to open our home schedule with The GAME 2.0, which so many people on campus and within the surrounding community have made possible with their hard work and commitment to enhancing the Longwood Lancer spirit and athletic experience.”
As previously announced, Longwood will begin its home campaign with
The GAME 2.0 (Greatest Athletics March Ever), a special community event to take place on Sunday, August 21, against Great West Conference member Howard at 7 p.m. Additional home match highlights include in-state opponent and Big South Conference member Radford (September 16, 7 p.m.), along with Atlantic Coast Conference member North Carolina State (October 7, 7 p.m.). The other home schedule opponents include Southern Conference member Appalachian State (September 4, 2 p.m.), Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) member Tennessee Tech (September 9, 7 p.m.), Big South member Charleston Southern (September 23, 4 p.m.), Great West members South Carolina State (September 25, 2 p.m.) and the New Jersey Institute of Technology (October 9, 1 p.m.), Horizon League member Cleveland State (October 15, 1 p.m.), and OVC member Eastern Kentucky (October 21, 7 p.m.) for Senior Night.
“While we continue to take on more Big South opponents than any other league, we really embrace the diversity of our schedule in being able to measure our Longwood women's soccer program against schools from so many quality conferences,” explained Dyer. “On that same note, hosting ACC school North Carolina State for the first time is a real highlight for our schedule and an opportunity that we look forward to.”
Highlighted in-state opponents on the road include Big South member Liberty (August 29, 7 p.m.), Colonial Athletic Association member George Mason (September 11, 2 p.m.), and Big South member VMI (September 18, 2 p.m.). Other road contests include Southern member Elon (August 25, 7 p.m.), Atlantic Sun Conference member East Tennessee State (September 2, 4 p.m.), OVC member Morehead State (October 23, 1 p.m.), and Independent Francis Marion (October 30, 3 p.m.) to complete the season.
“We feel good about the strength and make up of our fall schedule, so now it's just a matter of putting in the work to see exactly how we stack up, both regionally and nationally,” added Dyer. “In a very short time, we've established a winning tradition, but now it's time to see if we're ready to take that next step and make some real noise. We have a team capable of great things and we're all excited to see how the season unfolds.”
Longwood returns seven starters among 19 letterwinners from a year ago, and has added 11 newcomers (nine freshmen) to the roster for 2011. Coach Dyer is the only head coach the sport has ever had as he boasts an overall coaching record of 186-112-16 (.618). He has been assisted over the past seven years by associate head coach Steve Brdarski.
