LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Longwood University men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision at Liberty University of the Big South Conference on Tuesday evening in Lynchburg. Junior Devin Pierce|Virginia Beach (Ocean Lakes) scored in the 90th minute for the Lancers (1-1) against the Flames (1-1) who scored one goal in the first half and two goals in the second half. Longwood returns to action on Saturday, September 3, when it hosts the University of North Florida of the Atlantic Sun Conference at 7 p.m. at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.

Liberty took the 1-0 lead at 15:50 when Darren Amoo scored on a header to the left corner. Longwood pushed offensively in the first half and had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks and 6-5 edge in shots, but the Lancers trailed 1-0 at halftime. Amoo scored his second goal of the match at 51:32 and Timothy Bullock added a goal at 71:39 to push the Flames' lead to 3-0. Pierce scored for Longwood at 89:58 off a corner kick from sophomore Nick Surkamp|Manassas (Osbourn Park) to make the final 3-1.

“Today was a tale of two halves,” said head coach Jon Atkinson. “Longwood enjoyed the first half, but the speed of Liberty's play was hard to hold on to. Liberty is a strong outfit and was too much for us in the end. We had good chances and could have made it interesting if a few of our early ones had gone in.”

Longwood had a 7-3 advantage on corner kicks while the Flames' had an 11-10 edge in shots. Surkamp led the Lancers with three shots, including two shots on goal, while senior Joel Helmick|Springfield (W.T. Woodson) made two saves while playing the entire match in goal. Liberty was paced by Amoo with two goals on four shots while Josh Pacella recorded four saves in 90 minutes in goal.
