FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University men's soccer team defeated Randolph College 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville to open the 2011 campaign. The Lancers (1-0) play a pair of matches this week, traveling to Lynchburg to take on Liberty University of the Big South Conference on Tuesday, August 30, at 7 p.m., before returning home to host the University of North Florida of the Atlantic Sun Conference on Saturday, September 3, at 7 p.m. at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Admission is free to all Longwood home fall athletics events.

Looking Back
Longwood defeated Randolph College 2-0 on Saturday at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Sophomore Nick Surkamp|Manassas (Osbourn Park) scored in the third minute for the Lancers, while freshman Zach Crandall|Lorton (South County Secondary) added an insurance goal in the 63rd minute. Senior goalkeeper Joel Helmick|Springfield (W.T. Woodson) recorded the shutout for the Lancers.

A Look At Liberty
Liberty is 0-1 on the season after dropping a 1-0 decision at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon. The Flames return eight starters from last year's squad that went 10-7-1 and ranked 21st nationally in goals per game (1.94). Liberty is coached by 11th-year head coach Jeff Alder.

A Look at North Florida
North Florida is 0-1 after falling at home to Georgia Southern 5-0. The Ospreys return leading scorer Ricky Lawrence (3g, 3a, 9p) from the 2010 squad that went 3-10, including a 1-0 victory over Longwood in Jacksonville. UNF is led by first-year head coach Derek Marinatos.

Shutout
Senior goalkeeper Joel Helmick has recorded nine shutouts in his four-year career, with at least one shutout every season after his season-opening perfect match against visiting Randolph College.

Freshman Scorer
Zach Crandall scored an insurance goal for the Lancers in their victory over Randolph College. In 2010, the only freshman to score a goal was Nick Surkamp, who also scored against Randolph in the season-opener.

Home Field
Longwood has posted a 22-16-7 record at the Athletics Complex since the facility opened for the 2006 season, including a 5-2 mark in 2009. The Lancers went 2-4-4 in home contests in 2010 and are a perfect 1-0 in 2011.

Familiar Faces
Longwood welcomes back three three-year starters in 2011. Goalkeeper Joel Helmick has started 49 of 52 matches and posted a career 1.53 goals against average. Forward Zack Mahon has scored six goals with two assists for 14 points including a career-high four goals in 2010. Defender Shane Johnson has appeared in 52 matches with 51 starts and has scored three goals with four assists for 10 points.
