Radford, Va. - The Longwood University men's soccer team dropped a close 1-0 decision to Radford University of the Big South Conference on Saturday evening in Radford. The game was close throughout before Radford (3-2-1) converted a penalty kick in the 85th minute. Longwood (0-7-1) returns to action on Tuesday, September 28, when it travels to Charlottesville to take on the University of Virginia at 7 p.m..
“Going in we knew this was going to be a tough encounter,” said sixth-year head coach Jon Atkinson. “It was a poor game in general. Our overtime game against VCU took the zip out of our legs. We still have a ways to go this season and our young team will learn lessons this season that will prepare them for the future.
Sophomore Devin Pierce | Virginia Beach (Ocean Lakes) had the best scoring chance for Longwood in the first half when he ripped a shot that was stopped by the Radford goalkeeper.
In the second half, the Lancers had a corner kick in the 49th minute, but could not get a shot off. Minutes later, sophomore Parker Arnold | Columbia, S.C. (Darlington Academy) sent a shot over the crossbar. The match remained tied until the 85th minute when Bernardo Ulmo scored on a penalty kick.
Longwood had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks while the Highlanders outshot Longwood 9-2. Junior goalkeeper Joel Helmick | Springfield (W.T. Woodson) made three saves in 90 minutes, while Ryan Taylor and Joey Dennis combined for the shutout for Radford.
