HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Longwood University men's soccer team fell 3-0 at James Madison University of the Colonial Athletic Association on Sunday afternoon in Harrisonburg. CJ Sapong recorded a hat trick, scoring on a pair of headers and a penalty kick for the Dukes. The Lancers return to action on Wednesday, September 15, when they travel to Towson, Maryland, to take on Towson University of the CAA at 4 p.m..
“The boys did a good job in the first half,” said sixth-year head coach
Jon Atkinson. “We were patient and handled the pressure well. We didn't have the intensity in the second half and then JMU capitalized on a couple of set pieces. We have to continue to play with discipline but also take advantage of our opportunities. Today was a solid performance, undone by a few set pieces.”
Longwood (0-4) had three shots in the first 17 minutes, but the first by sophomore

Nick Surkamp | Manassas (Osbourn Park) took the only shot on goal for the Lancers in the 17th minute that was saved by JMU's Ken Manahan. James Madison (4-0) outshot Longwood 9-3 in the first half and had a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks, but the Lancers went in to halftime tied at 0-0.
James Madison broke the game open in the 55th minute with a Sapong header off a free kick from Christian McLaughlin. He added his second goal of the match in the 68th minute on a header off a corner kick from Patrick Innes. His third goal came on a penalty kick in the 81st minute to put the Dukes ahead 3-0.
JMU outshot Longwood 21-4 in the match and had a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior
Joel Helmick | Springfield (W.T. Woodson) played in goal for Longwood and recorded six saves while allowing three goals in 90 minutes. Manahan finished with one save in the shutout.
