Rock The Rally|Move The March|Get In The Game; Updated Information For Sunday Afternoon (8.22)

Update on the GAME (Greatest Athletics March Ever) | August 22 - 12:30 p.m.

Due to the possibility of rain, the Rally has been moved to Willett Hall and will occur at 5 p.m. The picnic has been moved into the Dining Hall and will occur at 4 p.m.

If the weather is clear, we plan to MARCH to the Athletics Complex on Johnston Drive. We will make the decision about the march this afternoon and announce it at the Rally. Rides from Willett Hall will be available regardless of the weather.

Inclement weather does not affect Lancer pride! Come on out and Rock the Rally, Move the March, and Get in the GAME! More information about the GAME is listed below. If you have any questions, please contact Stacey Wilkerson at wilkersonsu@longwood.edu.

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University Athletics will begin 2010-11 with a special community event, designated The GAME (Greatest Athletics March Ever), to take place on Sunday, August 22, involving the first women's soccer home match against the University of Richmond at the Athletics Complex. The festivities will get under way with a picnic behind the Lankford Student Union on the lawn beginning at 4 p.m., followed by a pep rally featuring new Longwood President Patrick Finnegan at 5 p.m., while President Finnegan and First Lady Joan Finnegan will lead everyone in a 6 p.m. march from campus up Fourth Street and Longwood Avenue to the soccer facility located on Johnston Drive for the opening kickoff at 7 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to participate, and all those marching to the field will receive a commemorative Longwood Lancers scarf.

“All great institutions have traditions that take on a legendary status,” explained Longwood women's soccer associate head coach Steve Brdarski. “My hope is that this march becomes one of Longwood's great traditions, unifying our campus and creating the kinds of memories that we will all talk about for a long, long time. The march has the potential to become a legendary moment in our school's history, and I hope people will embrace it as such.”

Longwood student leaders Ben Brittain (SGA president and FYE coordinator), Michael Young (men's golf standout and student-athlete advisory committee president), and Brittany Matthews (softball student-athlete, SAAC vice president, and peer mentor) will open the Lancer spirit rally for President Finnegan. The rally will serve as motivation for everyone to march to the Athletics Complex where they will cheer on the Lancers as they play their home opener against the in-state rival Spiders, including the opening kick by President Finnegan. This event welcomes all new students as well as President and Mrs. Finnegan to both the Longwood and Farmville communities.

The picnic, to include chicken barbecue, pork barbecue, and a vegetarian option, is open to all community members at a minimal price. Transportation will be provided to students who want to participate in the event, but choose not to march. There will be giveaways at the Athletics Complex by Lancer Productions, including Lancer towels, koozies, and other items, along with concessions sponsored by ARAMARK while Barnes & Noble at Longwood will be selling Lancer attire as well. A shuttle service back to campus will be available from 8:15 p.m. until 10 p.m. as a D.J. will begin playing music at the end of the game at approximately 9 p.m.

The GAME is a collective effort among the Athletics Department, the Office of First Year Experience, and the Town of Farmville. It came about after Coach Brdarski, First Year Experience assistant director Stacey Wilkerson, and Brittain brainstormed for ideas to incorporate athletics into New Lancer Days, Longwood's extended four-day orientation experience for all new students leading up to the start of the fall semester. It provides new students an opportunity to meet new classmates, develop friendships with upper-class student leaders, learn about valuable resources available on campus, and explore a variety of issues that they will undoubtedly face during their time at Longwood.
