Longwood Set For Atlantic Soccer Conference Tournament

FARMVILLE, Va. - The Longwood University men's soccer team is set to begin the 2010 Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC) Tournament on Thursday, November 11, when it takes on Howard University on Motamed Field in Garden City, New York, at 2 p.m.. Houston Baptist University earned the top seed and will face the winner of the #5 seed Longwood vs. #4 seed Howard match on Friday at 4 p.m.. The #3 seed New Jersey Institute of Technology will face the hosts #2 seed Adelphi University at 7 p.m. on Friday. The championship match is set for Sunday, Nov. 14, at 1 p.m..

Longwood (2-12-4, 0-3-1 ASC), ASC Tournament champions in 2008 and runners-up last season,  is led by senior Harvey Headley | Coventry, England (Stoke Park) with 15 points (7g,1a). Junior Zack Mahon | San Antonio, Texas (William Howard Taft) has registered nine points (4g,1a) while freshman Nick Surkamp | Manassas (Osbourn Park) has four points (1g,2a). Junior goalkeeper Joel Helmick | Springfield (W.T. Woodson) has posted a 1.59 goals against average in 17 appearances this season.

Houston Baptist (7-7-2, 3-0-1 ASC) enters the tournament as the top seed after claiming their first ASC regular season crown. The Huskies are unbeaten in their last six contests. Kristopher Tyrpak and Leonel Munoz are the team's top two scorers with 19 points (7g,5a) and 14 points (6g,2a) respectively. Chris Dodd has seen the bulk of the work in goal for HBU, posting a goals against average of 1.47 and making 65 saves.

Adelphi (9-6-2, 2-0-2 ASC) has not lost a match against a conference opponent since a 2-1 defeat at the hands of HBU on October 17, 2009, going 5-0-2 since that date, including a perfect 2-0 during last year's ASC Championship run. Issa Tall and Alex Kouznetsov enter the tournament as Adelphi's top scorers with 11 points (5g,1a) and 10 points (4g,2a) each. Thorne Holder has posted seven shutouts this season, allowing less than one goal per game (0.81).

NJIT (4-12-1, 1-2-1 ASC) is led by Jack McVey with 10 points (5g), while Rahim Stennett and Papis Ciss have each scored seven points (3g,1a). John Ricketti has played every minute of every game in goal for NJIT, posting a goals against average of 2.03.

Howard (2-11-3, 1-2-1 ASC) has recorded ties in its final two regular season matches and won the regular-season meeting against the Lancers. Phillip Borde has scored three of Howard's seven goals on the season, while Mario Martin has scored two. Larry Turner has seen action in 15 games in goal for the Bison, posting a goals against average of 2.37.
