WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Longwood University men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC) decision at Howard University on Saturday evening in Washington, D.C.. Senior
Harvey Headley | Coventry, England (Stoke Park) scored for the Lancers (1-9-2, 0-1 ASC) against the Bison (2-9-1, 1-0 ASC). Longwood returns to action on Friday, October 15, when it hosts ASC member Adelphi University at 7 p.m. at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Admission is free.
“The first half led to a terrible result,” said sixth-year head coach
Jon Atkinson. “The game can lack a few ingredients, but if you lack desire, then you are asking for trouble. The second half, though vastly improved, was too little, too late.”
Howard struck first in the 25th minute when Phillip Borde scored for the Bison. Headley answered in the 37th minute when he ripped a shot from the top of the penalty box off a corner kick by sophomore
Vinnie Llana | Raleigh, N.C. (Broughton). The Bison took the lead for good in the 39th minute when Claudy St. Louis scored the match-winner from 15 yards.
In the second half, sophomore
Devin Pierce | Virginia Beach (Ocean Lakes) had a pair of shots stopped early in the period. Longwood outshot Howard 9-2 in the second half.
The Lancers had a 15-7 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks. Junior
Joel Helmick | Springfield (W.T. Woodson) had two saves while allowing two goals in 90 minutes. Headley led Longwood offensively with one goal on four shots while Pierce and Llana had three shots each. Larry Turner recorded four saves in 90 minutes for Howard. The Bison were led offensively by Borde and St. Louis with one goal each. Frederick Burgess had one assist and two shots.
