DAYTON, Ohio -- Longwood University dropped a 2-1 women's soccer road decision at Wright State University of the Horizon League Friday night in Dayton, Ohio. Sophomore standout
Lindsey Ottavio|Fairfax (W.T. Woodson) scored her 13th goal of the season in the 85th minute for LU. The Raiders (6-7) scored goals in the 30th and 70th minutes against the visiting Lancers (8-6). Longwood will return to action next Friday afternoon, October 15, hosting fellow Independent school Francis Marion University at the Athletics Complex in Farmville beginning at 4 p.m. It will be Longwood Appreciation Day in recognition of all faculty and staff of the University, and as always, the admission is free.
Wright State took a 1-0 advantage into the intermission after a goal from Lauren Patterson at 29:45 with an assist from Brittany Persaud on a corner kick opportunity. The host Raiders secured their home victory with an insurance goal at 69:43 by Amber Kasmer. Ottavio tallied her team-leading 13th goal this season late in the match at 84:43, assisted by senior
Kayla Huggins|North Haven, Conn. (North Haven), to help Longwood avoid the shutout. Ottavio was tied for third in Division I goals this week, and tied for seventh nationally in points.
"We played our best soccer of the season, and lost 2-1 to a very good team," said 17th-year head coach
Todd Dyer '93. "We've played 14 games this season and I'm most proud of our effort tonight. We're excited about the next five matches we have in front of us."
Longwood had an 18-14 advantage in shots, though it was 8-8 in attempts on-goal, and the Lancers took an 8-5 edge on corner kicks. Graduate keeper
Marcia Biddle|Woodbridge (Gar-Field) played the duration in front of the net for the Lancers with six saves. Meghan Hackerson played the entire match for the Raiders as well with seven saves.
It was only the second-ever meeting between the two schools in the sport of women's soccer as Wright State leads the young series at 2-0, including a 1-0 double-overtime win in Farmville last season. The Lancers are 7-1 this season in home contests, while now 1-5 in away matches.
