BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took an exciting 2-1 women's soccer victory past visiting Big South Conference member Coastal Carolina University Friday night at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.  Junior Alex Myers/Stafford (Colonial Forge) scored the game-winning goal at 82:54 as the Lancers (1-2) tallied two late goals within two minutes for its first-ever win against the Chanticleers (1-3).  Longwood will return to action on Sunday, September 6, hosting another Big South school as Charleston Southern University visits the Athletics Complex in Farmville beginning at 2:30 p.m..  Earlier on Sunday, Coastal Carolina will play the University of Richmond at the Athletics Complex starting at 12 p.m..  Admission is Free.

Longwood fell behind 1-0 at the intermission as Coastal Carolina got a first-half goal from Samantha Teijelo at 25:20, unassisted on a free kick from 20 yards.  The Lancers took momentum early in the second half and began pressuring the Chanticleers with several attempts on-goal that were stopped.  Longwood finally tallied its first goal of the season at 81:20 when freshman Lindsey Ottavio/Fairfax (W.T. Woodson) took a nice pass from Myers and scored her first collegiate goal from the right side with a hard shot into the net.  LU quickly took the lead just 1:34 later when Myers got loose and fired from 25 yards and beat the keeper to the left corner.  It proved the game-winning goal much to the delight of the boisterous crowd of 375.

“Obviously, we feel pretty good about beating a team that we have never beaten before, especially in coming back from a one goal deficit,” said 16th-year head coach Todd Dyer '93.  “I thought we were very dangerous the whole game as we did a pretty good job of creating our chances.  We showed lots of spirit and kept fighting and went out and won the game.  We're just pleased to see the team be rewarded like that for such a good effort.”

Longwood took a 14-5 advantage in shots, including 10-4 in attempts on-goal, and had a 5-0 margin on corner kicks while defeating CCU for the first time in five matches.  Freshman keeper Kyra Byron/Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) started her first collegiate match and played the duration in front of the net for Lancers with three saves.  Karen Pavlick played the duration for Coastal Carolina as well with eight saves.

Earlier on Friday evening, Charleston Southern defeated Richmond 2-1.
