EMMITSBURG, Md. -- Longwood University took a 4-1 women's soccer road victory at Mount St. Mary's University of the Northeast Conference Friday night in Emmitsburg, Maryland.  Senior Tia Nardella/Brookline, Mass. (Brookline) scored what proved to be the decisive goal at 12:29 as the Lancers won their sixth match in seven contests while improving to 6-3; the Mountaineers dropped to 2-6-1.  Longwood will play again on Sunday, September 27, remaining on the road at VMI of the Big South Conference in Lexington beginning at 2 p.m..

Longwood scored quickly in the contest at 7:57 as senior Kaylyn Mahon/Spring Grove, Pa. (Spring Grove) was wide open in the box and found the back of the net off a cross from the left side by Nardella.  Nardella scored her first goal of the season just minutes later with a hard shot from the left side off an assist from sophomore Kacie Oliver/Portsmouth, R.I. (Portsmouth), and it remained 2-0 at the intermission.  Junior transfer Jessica Varela/Midlothian (Clover Hill) scored her first goal for the Lancers at 65:11, rebounding a shot by freshman Nikki Glisson/Mechanicsville (Hanover).  The Mount avoided the home shutout when Sadie Winship tallied a goal from a free kick at 73:03.  LU, however, secured its first road win of the season with a fourth goal at 79:15 by senior Michelle DeSieno/Centreville (Chantilly), assisted by freshman Lindsey Ottavio/Fairfax (W.T. Woodson), DeSieno's team-leading fifth of the season and 15th goal of her career.

“We're very excited to get our first win on the road,” said 16th-year head coach Todd Dyer '93.  “We were fortunate enough to create some good scoring chances and were able to score goals.  They were a tough team and it was a great atmosphere with their new soccer complex.”

Mount St. Mary's had a slight 17-15 advantage in shots, including 8-7 in attempts on-goal, and the hosts had a 3-2 edge on corner kicks.  Redshirt-junior keeper Marcia Biddle/Woodbridge (Gar-Field) played the entire match in front of the net for Longwood with seven saves.  Alicia Miller played the duration for The Mount as well with three saves.
