FARMVILLE, Va. - Longwood University fell at UNC Greensboro 1-0 in men's soccer on Sunday afternoon in Greensboro, North Carolina. Sophomore goalkeeper
Joel Helmick/Springfield (W.T. Woodson) had seven saves in the match. The Lancers return to action on Wednesday, September 16, when they face George Washington University at 4 p.m. in Washington, D.C..
Both teams struggled to create many scoring opportunities in the first half with UNCG edging Longwood on shots 5-4. Both goalkeepers had a pair of saves in the period.
Helmick made five saves in the second half before the Spartans scored the game's only goal in the 86th minute when Matt Foxx got his head on the ball and bounced it off a Longwood defender and into the goal to give UNCG a 1-0 lead. The Lancers controlled midfield for most of the game until the final 15 minutes when the Spartans turned up the pressure.
Longwood's best scoring opportunities came early in the second half. Junior
Harvey Headley/Coventry, England (Stoke Park) had one where he beat the goalie but sent the ball just wide. Minutes later, sophomore
Chris Saul/Pasadena, Maryland (Chesapeake) had a shot that was deflected off the post by the UNCG goalkeeper.
“Our guys deserve more than this,” said Longwood head coach
Jon Atkinson. “This shows we can compete with the best. We just need to turn our negatives into positives. I'm proud of the way we played.”
UNC Greensboro held a 9-1 advantage on corner kicks, including a 6-0 edge in the second half.
Headley had two shots for the Lancers while senior

Patrick McDaniel/Midlothian (Cosby) each had one shot on goal.
