FARMVILLE, Va. - The Longwood University men's soccer team fell to top-seeded Adelphi University in the Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC) championship match on Sunday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Junior
Harvey Headley/Coventry, England (Stoke Park) scored the lone goal for Longwood. The Lancers end the season with a 6-12-2 record.
Adelphi got on the board first in the 14th minute when Ryan Vulin sent a corner kick to the middle of the box and Kevin Gluchowski headed the ball in. The rest of the first half was an offensive struggle where Longwood outshoot Adelphi 2-1.
The Panthers struck quickly in the second half, again on a corner kick. Vulin sent the kick to the near post where Issa Tall got his head on the ball and deflected it into the goal to give Adelphi a 2-0 lead in the 47th minute. Longwood pulled within one in the 68th minute when senior
Brian Germain/McLean (Langley) played a free kick into the box and Headley connected on the header, sending the ball into the upper left corner. Adelphi slowed the match down after the last goal, extending each possession.
“The slow start cost us today,” said Longwood head coach
Jon Atkinson. “Allowing two set-piece goals was criminal but in the second half we showed character and gave them a run for their money. The season has been a journey with many lessons learned along the way which will help build for next year. I salute the seniors who gave their all and encouraged the underclassmen to pick up the baton to take us to the next level.”
Adelphi outshot Longwood 7-4 and had a 9-2 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper
Joel Helmick/Springfield (W.T. Woodson) made three saves in goal for the Lancers.
