BOONE, N.C. -- Longwood University dropped a 2-0 women's soccer decision to UNC Wilmington in the final match of the Mountaineer Invitational hosted by Appalachian State University Sunday afternoon in Boone, North Carolina. The Lancers are now 3-2-1, while the Seahawks improved to 3-3-1. Longwood is scheduled to play again this Saturday, September 20, hosting George Mason University at the Athletics Complex on Johnston Drive beginning at 4 p.m..
Longwood and UNC Wilmington battled scoreless through the first period, and through nearly half of the second period as well before the Seahawks scored at 71:32. The Lancers had an opportunity at goal in the 78th minute but the shot attempt went wide. UNCW secured the neutral-site victory with another late goal at 86:33. Erin Pardini tallied the first goal, assisted by Brittany Croce, while Kelly Dodd notched the second score unassisted for the Seahawks.
UNC Wilmington took a 20-4 advantage in shots, including 11-3 in attempts on-goal, and had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Freshman
Kacie Oliver/Portsmouth, R.I. (Portsmouth) led the attack with two shots, one on-goal. Redshirt-sophomore keeper
Marcia Biddle/Woodbridge (Gar-Field) made a season-high nine saves while playing the duration in front of the net for the Lancers. Emily Pratt played the entire match in goal for the Seahawks as well with three saves.
It was the first-ever women's soccer contest between Longwood and UNC Wilmington.
