BOX SCORE
CONWAY, S.C. - The Longwood University men's soccer team (1-1) defeated Coastal Carolina (1-1) in the final game of the Coastal Carolina University/Adidas Classic, 2-1, on Saturday evening. The Lancers were propelled by sophomore
Harvey Headley/Coventry, England (Stoke Park), who scored his second goal of the season, and freshman Shane Johnson/Ashburn (Broad Run). Longwood returns to the field on Friday, September 5, opening home play against George Washington at the Athletics Complex at 7 p.m.
Johnson gave the Lancers the early lead, scoring his first collegiate goal in the 17th minute after heading the ball past the Coastal Carolina keeper. The Lancers lead increased to two in the 56th minute, after the team earned a penalty kick, which was taken and made by Headley.
Coastal Carolina would earn one goal back in the 72nd minute after a Coastal player crossed the ball into the box, finding one of his teammates. Despite the late goal it would not be enough to keep the Lancers from their first win of the season.
Freshman
Joel Helmick/Springfield (W.T. Woodson) made eight saves for the Lancers, while playing all 90 minutes.
