Longwood Swept At William and Mary 13-9, 14-1

Sophomore Scott Kimble Collects Three Hits, Including HR, Four RBI In Opener Against Tribe

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Longwood University dropped baseball doubleheader at the College of William and Mary Saturday in Williamsburg, falling 13-9 in the first game and 14-1 in the second game. The Lancers are now 21-21 while the Tribe of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) improved to 34-13 overall. Longwood will play again on Monday, May 5, at Duke University of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. in Durham, North Carolina.

In the opener, Longwood scored two runs in the first inning and led 4-1 after three at-bats before William and Mary scored six runs in the third to take a 7-4 advantage. The Lancers battled back with three runs in the fourth to tie the game at 7-7 but the Tribe added two more runs in the fourth to lead 9-7. LU again tied the contest, this time at 9-9, with two runs in the sixth though the hosts once-again responded with two runs in the sixth ahead of two more runs in the eighth to secure the hard-fought four-run victory.

Longwood was led by sophomore Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (3-3, 4 RBI) who collected three hits and four RBI, including his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field in the sixth. Kimble also added a two-run single in the fourth. Fellow classmates Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (2-5, 2 RBI) and David Smiy Jr./Chesterfield (Motoaca) (2-5, RBI) each had two hits for the Lancers as Cerreto hit his first home run of the season as well, a solo blast to left field in the first. He added a run-scoring single in the first, while Smiy contributed an RBI double in the fourth. Junior Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (1-3, RBI) hit his second homer of the season while leading-off the second, to left field, and sophomore Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (1-4, RBI) had an RBI double in the first.

Junior John Walker II/Alexandria (West Potomac) (5-4) took the pitching loss in middle relief, allowing four hits and four runs, two earned, with one strikeout and no walks in 2.2 innings. Senior John Farrell/Nantucket, Mass. (Nantucket) had started on the mound, yielding eight hits and seven runs, six earned, with two strikeouts and no walks in 3.0 innings.

W&M was led in the first game by Ben Guez (4-5, RBI), Mike Sheridan (2-5, 3 RBI), Greg Maliniak (3-4, 2 RBI), Robbie Nickle (2-5, 3 RBI), and James Williamson (2-4, 2 RBI). Guez, Sheridan, and Maliniak each hit home runs for the Tribe, while Jeremy Neustifter (4-2) had the mound win with 3.1 innings of middle relief, allowing two hits and two earned runs.

In the nightcap, Longwood scored a run in the first inning before W&M plated two runs in both the second and third to lead 4-1. The Tribe added a run in the fourth, seven runs in the fifth, and two runs in the sixth for the decisive win.

Junior Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (1-3, RBI) opened the second game with an opposite-field home run to right field, his third homer of the season, that allowed the Lancers to avoid the shutout. Cerreto (1-3) and freshman Justin Morreim/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) (1-3) had the only other hits for the visitors.

Freshman Chris Briere/Midlothian (James River) (2-3) took the pitching loss with the first 3.0 innings, allowing 10 hits and five runs, four earned, with one strikeout and no walks.

W&M was led by Guez (4-5, 2 RBI), Sheridan (3-4, 2 RBI), Nickle (3-4, 2 RBI), Chris Jensen (2-4, RBI), and Lanny Stanfield (4-4, 3 RBI). Guez and Jensen each homered, while Kevin Landry (3-0) earned the mound win with the first 6.0 innings, yielding just three hits and one earned run with eight strikeouts and no walks.

William and Mary won all three games played between the two schools this season and now leads the overall series 13-6.
