LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Longwood University posted a 3-3 baseball tie at Liberty University Sunday afternoon at Worthington Stadium in Lynchburg, a game that was ruled official through six innings due to heavy rain. The Lancers are now 22-25-1 while the Flames of the Big South Conference are 28-23-1 overall. Longwood will play again on Tuesday night, May 13, hosting Radford University of the Big South in its home finale at Lancer Stadium in Farmville at 7 p.m..
Longwood scored single runs in each of the first, third, and fifth innings before the game was halted. Liberty scored two runs in the third inning and added another run in the fifth as well ahead of the rain that stopped play in the top of the seventh inning.
In the first, junior Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (1-3) reached on an error and scored on a one-out RBI triple to center field by sophomore Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (2-3, RBI). In the third, Bailey singled to lead-off and later crossed the plate on a throwing error. In the fifth, Cerreto doubled down the left-field line with two outs and came home on a double to right-center field from freshman Justin Morreim/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) (1-3, RBI). Senior Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (2-3) also had two hits for the Lancers. Freshman Chris Briere/Midlothian (James River) (2-3) started and pitched the 6.0 innings, allowing just four hits and three runs, one earned, with four strikeouts and two walks.
Liberty was led by Cody Brown (2-3, RBI) with two hits and an RBI, including a run-producing double in the fifth inning. Ryan Page (4-5) pitched the 6.0 innings for the Flames, yielding seven hits and three runs, one earned, with five strikeouts and no walks.
