BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. - Longwood University women’s lacrosse was defeated by Virginia Tech 22-12 on Wednesday afternoon at the Longwood Athletics Complex. The Lancers fall to 5-10 and return to action for their final game of the season on April 17 at 4 p.m. as they head to Washington, D.C. to face Howard. Longwood was led by senior Joyce Haines/Prince Frederick, Md. (Calvert) who earned for points after scoring one goal and collecting three assists.

Prior to the match Haines, along with fellow seniors Allie Armstrong/Chestertown, Md. (Queen Anne’s) and Jennifer Holliday/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) were honored by teammates and fans as the trio played their final home game of their careers.

“I am very proud of our seniors and congratulate them for all their hard work,” head coach Janet Grubbs said. “I especially proud of Joyce who was named Player of the Game.”

Haines got things started for the Lancers in the fourth minute of action, dishing a pass to freshman Karli Brentlinger/Gambrills, Md. (South River) to help tie the game at 1-1. Sophomore Britt Farquharson/Mississauga, Ontario, Canada (Lorne Park Secondary) would tie the game up once again for Longwood, scoring on a Kesley Dean/Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne’s) pass, making the score 2-2. Much of the first half would be spent as a game of cat and mouse with both teams chasing each other up and down the field, trying to outmatch the other.

Brentlinger would add another goal before the half. Dean would also get one to go in the net, while classmate Cara O’Brien/Arlington (Bishop O’Connell) scored her first goal of the game in the 19th minute, and sophomore Page Farmer/Richmond (St. Catherine’s) netted one in the 23rd minute. The Lancers headed into the locker room trailing the Hokies 10-6.

Haines netter her first goal of the game right out of the gates, scoring just 37 seconds into the second half. Farquharson netted her second goal of the game in the 37th minute on an assist by Haines, helping the Lancers cut the score to 10-8. Junior Liz Sellmayer/Catonsville, Md. (Mount de Sales Academy) scored her first goal of the game in the 40th minute, making the score 13-9. Virginia Tech would go on a scoring rampage following Sellmayer’s goal, collecting six goals in a span of 10 minutes. Brentlinger would break up the scoring in the 55th minute, notching the hat-trick after earning a free position shot.

Freshman Josie Ziluca/Upperville (Loudoun Valley) followed Brentlinger’s lead, scoring a minute later to cut the score to 19-11 Virginia Tech. Farmer would score the last Lancer goal in the final minute of the game, but it would not be enough as Virginia Tech picked up a late goal to win 22-12.

Holliday played the complete game in goal, collecting 15 saves while facing 43 shots.
