GREENVILLE, N.C. – Longwood University fired a final-round of 298 Sunday in men’s golf for a 36-hole total of 597 (299-298) to finish in 10th-place among 15 teams at the Ironwood Pirate Intercollegiate hosted by East Carolina University. St. John’s University won the event with its 294-278--572 at the 7,102-yard, par 72 Ironwood Golf & Country Club in Greenville, North Carolina. The Lancers will play again next week on April 14 at the Washington & Lee Invitational in Lexington.
Longwood was led by junior Scooter Buhrman/Fayetteville, N.C. (Jack Britt) with his 72-74--146 to finish in an 18th-place tie individually among the field of 85 collegiate golfers. Buhrman was followed by senior Brett Chambers/Mount Sydney (Fort Defiance) (76-71--147, t-25th), sophomore Adam Webb/Ridgeway (Magna Vista) (74-79--153, t-61st), freshman Michael Young/Oakville, Ontario (Oakville Trafalgar) (80-74--154, t-64th), along with senior John Rosenstock/Midlothian (Midlothian) (77-81--158, t-77th). Keegan Bradley of St. John’s (72-66) and Ben Lown of Newberry College (69-69) shared medalist honors at 138. Buhrman tied for first in the field in eagles with one, while tied for third in par 5 scoring (4.50, -4). Chambers tied for eighth in par 4 scoring (3.95, -1).
Through nine tournaments this year, Buhrman and Webb are tied for the team lead in scoring average at 74.6 through 17 rounds, respectively. Young is close behind at 74.8 through 23 rounds, while others include Chambers (75.8, 17), freshman Jed Rasnick/Roanoke (Lord Botetourt) (76.8, 18), Rosenstock (77.1, 18), and junior Allain Blanchard/Williamsburg (Jamestown) (82.3, 8). Longwood is averaging 298.3 as a team, on-pace toward a new school-record (299.2).
Following the competition at W&L next week, Longwood will defend its title at the Mount St. Mary’s Invitational in Littlestown, Pennsylvania on April 18-19 at the Quail Valley Golf Club. The Lancers won last year’s tournament with a 54-hole total of 293-293-295—881, led by Webb’s medalist finish at 72-74-70—216.
