 Game One

Game Two

FARMVILLE, Va. - Longwood University softball (27-18) dropped its final two games of the season on Thursday night, falling 2-1 and 7-6 to Radford in Radford, Virginia. Despite getting on the board first in both games, the Lancers were unable to out-play the Highlanders in two evenly contested games. Offensively senior Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) led the way for Longwood, hitting 3-6 on the night.

Washington started the scoring in game one, scoring sophomore Cami Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) in the top of the first, hitting a single to left field and putting the Lancers up 1-0. Longwood would hang onto the lead until the bottom of the third, when Radford rallied back to score two of its own runs. Jennifer Everhart was responsible for both Highlander runs, scoring one of her teammates on a single up the middle and then coming around to score herself moments later.

The game would remain in Radford's favor 2-1 throughout the remainder of the game, as neither team was able to muster much of an offensive threat. The Highlanders out-hit the Lancers 7-4, while committing one error.

Senior Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) pitched the complete game, facing 24 batters and striking out two.

Game two began similarly to game one, with Washington once again taknig charge of the Lancers scoring presence, this time with a solo home run. The home run is Washington’s team-leading fourth of the season. The Lancer lead would be short lived as Kristen Shifflett hit a grand slam over the center field wall in the bottom of the inning.

Longwood would play small ball in the top of the second and third, earning two runs in each inning to regain the lead. Freshmen Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) and Brittany Matthews/Farmville (Prince Edward) scored the two Lancer runs in the second, with Wells crossing home on a wild pitch and Matthews being hit in. Freshman Tricia Nelson/Plainfield, Ill. (Plainfield Central) and Washington scored the runs in the third, putting Longwood up 5-4.

Shannon Keefe tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, leading off the inning with a home run over the center field fence. Longwood would make the score 6-5 in the top of the fifth with a double by Wells, who scored classmate Nichole Simmons/Chesapeake (Hickory) from second.

The Highlanders ended the game in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs on three hits. Shifflett and Keefe would lead the way for Radford, both scoring the two unearned runs.

Wells pitched four innings for the Lancers striking out one of the 18 batters she faced. Wells also ended the game 2-3 from the plate, picking up one RBI and scoring one run. Mills, who came in, in relief of Wells was given the loss after pitching two innings.
