Longwood Completes Series Sweep At UMBC 5-4; Hosts VCU Tuesday Night

Sophomore Phil Cerreto Collects Three Hits, Two RBI Against Retrievers In Baltimore

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Longwood University took a 5-4 baseball decision on the road at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County Sunday to complete a three-game series sweep. The Lancers improved to 17-10 this season, while the Retrievers of the America East Conference dropped to 6-13. Longwood will play again on Tuesday night, April 1, hosting VCU at Lancer Stadium in Farmville beginning at 7 p.m..

Longwood scored a run in the first inning and led 1-0 through four innings before adding three runs in the fifth to lead 4-0. UMBC responded with two runs in the fifth inning to pull within 4-2 but the Lancers added a run in the seventh to push their lead to 5-2. The Retrievers closed to within 5-4 with runs in both the seventh and eighth innings for the final one-run margin.

In the first, junior Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (1-5) opened the contest with a single, stole second, and scored with two outs on an RBI single from sophomore Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (3-4, 2 RBI). In the fifth, sophomore Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (1-4) doubled to left field to lead-off and crossed the plate on a two-out RBI doubled down the right-field line by freshman Justin Morreim/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) (2-5, 2 RBI). Morreim scored on an RBI double to right field from Cerreto, and Cerreto scored on an RBI triple to left field by senior Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (1-3, RBI). In the seventh, junior Paul Heidler II/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (0-2) drew a one-out walk and scored on another RBI double from Morreim, this one down the left-field line.

Senior John Farrell/Nantucket, Mass. (Nantucket) (2-2) earned the pitching win for Longwood with the first 5.0 innings, scattering six hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts and two walks. Senior Rob Moody/Midlothian (Midlothian) (2) picked-up his second save with the final 3.0 innings on the mound, yielding just one hit and one earned run with three walks. Junior Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (2-4) and sophomore Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (2-4) each collected two hits as well for the Lancers.

Scott Peddicord (3-5) led UMBC with three hits, while Mark Lemon (2-4, RBI) added two hits and an RBI, and Joe Fowler (1-4, 2 RBI) had two RBI. Ed Bach (2-2) had the mound loss for the Retrievers with the first 6.1 innings, allowing 11 hits and five earned runs with one strikeout and one walk.
