ALBANY, N.Y. - Longwood University women’s lacrosse fell to Albany 16-11 on Sunday afternoon in Albany, N.Y. The Lancers were led by sophomore Page Farmer/Richmond (St. Catherine’s) who recorded a hat-trick, while also adding an assist to tally four points. Longwood returns home for its next match-up when it hosts Presbyterian College at 4 p.m. at the Athletics Complex.
Farmer took control of the game early for the Lancers, scoring in the second minute of action after earning a free position shot. Albany would answer back 30 seconds later with a goal of its own, tying the game at 1-1. Junior Liz Sellmayer/Catonsville, Md. (Mount de Sales Academy) regained the lead for Longwood with 26:05 left in the half, after collecting a pass from sophomore Christine Comeau/Whitby, Ontario, Canada (Sinclair Secondary) and drilling it home.
It would once again take Albany 30 seconds to answer back, as Jodi Battaglia scored her first goal of the game with 25:46 left in the period. Battaglia’s goal set off a spark within her team causing the Great Danes to score three more goals within a minute of each other to take a 5-2 advantage.
Farmer would earn one goal back for the Lancers in the 12th minute, taking things upon herself and scoring an unassisted goal to make the score 5-3. Albany would put in back-to-back goals before Sellmayer and sophomore Carlie Nethken/Hanover, Md. (Long Reach) could add consecutive goals of their own. The Great Danes would score once more before the end of the half, sending the Lancers into the locker room down 9-6.
The Lancers would not catch a break in the second half as Albany mounted a scoring assault out of the gate, scoring four goals in the first ten minute. Longwood would not score its first goal of the second half until the 43rd minute when freshman Karli Brentlinger/Gambrills, Md. (South River) scored her eight goal of the season, after taking advantage of a free position shot.
Freshman Amanda Bereznay/Gwynn Oak, Md. (Setan Keaugh) would add a goal of her own in the 53rd minute, cutting the Albany lead to six. Longwood would make the score 14-9 with 6:39 left to play when freshman Kesley Dean/Centreville (Queen Anne’s) scored an unassisted goal. Albany would add two more goals of its own in the 54th minute, taking a 16-9 lead.
The Lancer offense would try to get back into the game in the final minutes of the game, with Farmer adding her third goal of game with 3:46 left to play. Junior Lauren Barnaba/Bel Air, Md. (John Carroll) scored her first goal of the game with 1:35 left to play, but it would not be enough to give the Lancers a win.
Sophomore Eliza Coughter/Charlottesville (Charlottesville) played the complete game in goal, recording 10 saves.
