Longwood Sweeps UMBC 6-3, 8-6

Sophomore Casey Havers Hits Two Home Runs, Including Grand Slam, Against Retrievers

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Longwood University swept a baseball doubleheader on the road at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County Saturday; winning the first game 6-3 and the second game 8-6. The Lancers are now 16-10 this season, while the Retrievers of the America East Conference dropped to 6-12. Longwood and UMBC will play again on Sunday, March 30, at 3 p.m. in Baltimore.

In the opener, Longwood scored a run in the second inning but fell behind 3-1 through four innings before rallying with five runs in the fifth inning en route to the seven-inning victory. In the second, junior Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (1-2) singled with two outs, moved to second on a passed ball, and scored on an RBI double by classmate Paul Heidler II/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (2-3, RBI). In the fifth, Heidler led-off with another double and scored on a pinch-hit, two-run home run to right field from sophomore Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (1-1, 2 RBI). With out out in the inning, sophomore David Smiy Jr./Chesterfield (Matoaca) (1-3, RBI) homered to left field — his first collegiate home run. Following another out, sophomore Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (2-4) reached on a single before senior Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (1-3, 2 RBI) hit a two-out, two-run home run to center field — his team-best third of the season.

Junior John Walker II/Alexandria (West Potomac) (4-2) earned the pitching win for the Lancers with a complete-game effort, scattering 11 hits and three earned runs with two strikeouts and no walks. Rich Conlon (2-3, 3 RBI) led UMBC with two doubles and three RBI, while Dan Blewett (1-4) had the mound loss for the Retrievers with a complete-game effort as well, allowing nine hits and five earned runs with five strikeouts and one walk.

In the nightcap, Longwood scored four runs in the first inning but UMBC responded with three runs in the first and two more runs in the second to lead 5-4. The Lancers tied it at 5-5 with a run in the fourth, however the Retrievers scored a run in the fourth inning as well to lead 6-5. LU secured the twinbill sweep with three runs in the sixth inning en route to another seven-inning triumph. In the first, Smiy (2-4, 2 RBI) reached on a one-out error before freshman Justin Morreim/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) (1-2) singled ahead of a walk to Cerreto (0-3) that loaded the bases. Havers (2-4, 4 RBI) promptly followed with his second home run of the day, this one a grand slam to right field to plate the four quick runs.

In the fourth, junior Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (3-4, RBI) hit a one-out homer to left field. In the sixth, Smiy hit a two-run double down the left field line to score sophomore Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (0-3) who had reached on a fielder's choice and Bailey who had singled. von Gersdorff 1-1, RBI) added a pinch-hit RBI single to score freshman Marcus Powell/Manassas (Osbourn) who pinch-ran for Smiy.

Sophomore Lance Harting/Ballston Spa, N.Y. (Ballston Spa) (4-1) pitched the final 4.1 innings of relief to gain the win, yielding three hits and one unearned run with three strikeouts and no walks. Will Delawter (2-4, 3 RBI) led UMBC with two home runs and three RBI, while he also had the mound loss with the first 5.2 innings, allowing 10 hits and seven earned runs with two strikeouts and three walks.
