Longwood Falls At Radford 16-6

Sophomore David Smiy Jr. Collects Three Hits, Three RBI Against Highlanders

RADFORD, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 16-6 baseball decision on the road at Radford University Wednesday afternoon in Radford. The Lancers are now 14-10 this season, while the Highlanders of the Big South Conference improved to 13-9. Longwood will play again this weekend, March 28-30, at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County for a three-game series that begins on Friday at 6 p.m. in Baltimore.

At Radford, Longwood took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning before the Highlanders quickly responded with five runs in their half of the first inning to lead for good at 5-1. RU added three runs in the second, two runs in the fourth, one run in the fifth, and five more runs in the sixth inning. The Lancers managed two runs in the sixth along with single runs in each of the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings for the final 10-run margin.

In the first, junior Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (2-5) led-off the game with a double to right-center field and scored the first of his four runs in the contest on a one-out sacrifice fly to left by freshman Justin Morreim/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) (0-4, RBI). In the sixth, Bailey reached on an error to lead-off, stole second, and scored on an RBI single from sophomore David Smiy Jr./Chesterfield (Matoaca) (3-4, 3 RBI). Smiy would later cross the plate on a two-out RBI single by freshman Marcus Powell/Manassas (Osbourn) (1-2, RBI). In the seventh, Bailey singled with two outs and scored on another RBI single from Smiy. In the eighth, sophomore Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (2-4) singled to open the frame and stole second with two outs before scoring on an error. In the ninth, the Bailey and Smiy combination worked again as Bailey reached on a one-out error and promptly stole second and third before crossing the plate on Smiy’s third run-scoring single of the day.

Freshman Chris Briere/Midlothian (James River) (1-2) took the pitching loss for Longwood with the first 1.2 innings, allowing nine hits and eight runs, three earned, with one strikeout. Sophomore Jake Yocum/Thurmont, Md. (Catoctin) pitched the final 2.0 innings of relief, yielding three hits and one unearned run with two strikeouts.

Radford was led by Raphael Turner (4-5, 2 RBI) with four hits and two RBI, and Alex Gregory (3-4, RBI) added three hits and an RBI, while Nick Minter (2-3, 3 RBI) and Nachion Moore (2-4, 3 RBI) each contributed two hits and three RBI. Mark Beppler (2-0) had the mound win with 4.0 innings of middle relief, scattering seven hits and three unearned runs with one strikeout.
