FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University split a baseball doubleheader against visiting Stony Brook University Saturday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville, winning the second game 7-3 after dropping the first game 7-6 in 12 innings. The Lancers are now 13-8, while the Seawolves from New York are now 6-8. Longwood and Stony Brook will conclude its three-game weekend series on Sunday, March 23, at Lancer Stadium beginning at 12 p.m..
In the nightcap, Longwood scored three runs in the first inning and added two runs in the third before pushing across single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. In the first, junior Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (2-4, RBI) reached on a bunt-single, stole second base, moved to third on a fly-ball out, and scored unearned when sophomore Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (1-3) reached on a fielding error. Classmate Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (2-3) followed with a single and both he and Cerreto crossed the plate on a two-out, two-run triple to right field by senior Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (2-3, 3 RBI). In the third, von Gersdorff drove in another run with a sacrifice fly, and Cerreto scored on a run-down play between first and second after he had singled earlier. In the fifth, freshman Justin Morreim/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) (1-4, RBI) homered to left field while leading-off the inning, and in the sixth, Bailey’s one-out RBI double down the left-field line produced the final run.
Junior John Walker II/Alexandria (West Potomac) (3-2) earned the pitching win with a complete-game effort on the mound, scattering six hits and three earned runs with seven strikeouts. Stony Brook was led in the second game by Brian Witkowski (3-4, RBI) with three hits, including a solo home run in the third inning, and Michael Stephan (1-4, 2 RBI) who hit a two-run homer in the first inning. Mike Errigo (1-3) took the loss on the hill with the first 5.0 innings, allowing seven hits and two earned runs with six strikeouts.
In the opener, Longwood had rallied from a 5-2 deficit after five innings with a run in the sixth and three runs in the seventh to lead 6-5 into the ninth inning when Stony Brook was able to tie the game at 6-6 with an unearned run on a two-out fielding error. The Seawolves won it in the 12th inning on a two-out, solo home run to right field by Witkowski (1-2, RBI). In the third inning, Bailey (3-6, 2 RBI) and junior Paul Heidler II/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (1-6, RBI) each had RBI singles. In the sixth, von Gersdorff (2-5, RBI) had an RBI double for the Lancers. In the seventh, Bailey had another RBI double before Morreim (2-5, 2 RBI) hit his first collegiate home run, a two-run blast to left field that looked like it might prove to be the game-winner before the unfortunate error in the ninth. Cerreto (2-5) and sophomore Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (2-5) each added two hits for Longwood in the opener.
Sophomore Lance Harting/Ballston Spa, N.Y. (Ballston Spa) (2-1) took the pitching loss with the final 5.0 innings of late extended relief, allowing just two hits and one earned run with one strikeout. Senior Isaac Weiderman/Chillicothe, Ohio (Huntington) had pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless middle relief, yielding two hits with a strikeout. Stony Brook was led in the first game by Chad Marshall (2-4), Jeremy Nowak (2-6), Steven Mazzurco (2-6, RBI) and Justin Echevarria (2-4, RBI) with two hits each, while Nowak (1-1) also earned the mound win with the final 4.0 shutout innings of late relief, scattering three hits with four strikeouts.
