FARMVILLE, Va. - Longwood University (1-3) picked up its first win of the 2008 season, defeating Long Island 18-5 on Saturday afternoon in Farmville. The Lancers were led by Dee Warehime/Westminster, Md. (Westminster) and Cara O’Brien/Arlington (Bishop O’Connell) who each recorded hat-tricks. Longwood returns to action on March 5 as they head to Harrisonburg to face James Madison a t5:30 p.m.
The Lancers dominated the first half of action from the start, taking a 5-0 advantage just ten minutes into the game. Long Island would earn a goal back in the 19:59 mark, but it would be the only goal scored by the Blackbirds in the first half. With 16:18 left to play in the first half, freshman Josie Zuluca/Upperville (Loudoun Valley) scored her first career goal, rushing down the center of the field.
Warehime would score her second goal of the game in the 4:41 mark, putting the Lancers up 10-1. Sophomore Christine Comeau/Whitby, Ontario, Canada (Sinclair Secondary School) would close out the scoring for Longwood in the first half, giving the Lancers a 11-1 advantage at halftime.
Long Island kept Longwood on its toes in the second half, notching a goal just seconds into the second period. Longwood would answer back with a goal by O’Brien at the 27:04 mark, giving the freshman her first career hat-trick. Warehime would add her third goal of the game 30 seconds later, putting the Lancers up 13-2.
The Lancers would continue to put the pressure on, taking a 15-3 lead with 21:47 left in the game. Long Island would score in the 18:06 mark making the score 15-4, but would not get its final goal of the game until the 4:43 mark. Britt Farquharson/Mississauga, Ontario, Canada (Lorne Park Secondary School) would score the Lancers final goal with 1:09 left to play, giving Longwood the 18-5 victory.
All three of the Lancers goalkeepers saw action in the victory, with senior Jennifer Holliday/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) starting the game and playing 36 minutes.
