March 18, 2008

Game One

Game Two

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University (17-7) defeated Marist College in both games of Tuesday’s double header at Lancer Field in Farmville. The Lancers knocked off Marist 2-0 in game one with senior Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) picking up her seventh win of the season. Game two saw Longwood end the day with a 3-0 victory led by Senior Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty). The Lancers return to action on March 22 when they take on #5 Florida of the Southeastern Conference at 12 p.m. in Gainesville, Fla.

Sophomore Cami Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) got the scoring started for Longwood in the bottom of the second inning of game one, reaching base on a single to left field. Ketsdever would move herself into scoring position by stealing second base, before Michelle Phillips/Powhatan (Powhatan) grounded out allowing Ketsdever to move to third. The run would come across moments later after a wild pitch gave Ketsdever the opportunity to take home.

Longwood would take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third, this time courtesy of senior Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman). With two outs in the inning Hooe would double to right field with two strikes. With the next batter up for Longwood, Hooe would steal third and advance home on a bad throw by the third baseman.

The remainder of the game would be a pitching dual between Mills and Red Fox senior Megan Rigos. Mills pitched the complete game facing 26 batters, striking out five.

Game two proved to be another defensive battle, with both teams struggling to take advantage of offensive opportunities. Longwood scored its three runs of the game in the bottom of the third inning despite only mustering two hits. Hooe began things for the Lancers, reaching base after being hit by the first pitch of the inning. The Lancers would get another base runner on board without a hit, as Phillips reached first after being walked. A double steal on the next pitch would put both Hooe and Phillips in scoring position for Washington. The senior short stop would earn a RBI after singling to left field, allowing Hooe to reach home.

Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) earned a RBI after flying out to center field, scoring Phillips from third. Washington would advance to third on the hit and take home after a throwing error by the center fielder, making the score 3-0. Both teams would hold each other scoreless throughout the remainder of the game.

Wells earned the complete game win for the Lancers, improving to 7-2 on the season after striking out five Red Fox batters.
